Investigating the effects of electron bounce-cyclotron resonance on plasma dynamics in capacitive discharges operated in the presence of a weak transverse magnetic field

Sarveshwar Sharma et al.

Summary: This paper reports an enhanced operating regime in low-pressure capacitively coupled discharge (CCP) driven by a high-frequency source in the presence of an external magnetic field. The particle-in-cell simulations indicate that a higher plasma density and ion flux are achieved at the electrode when the electron cyclotron frequency is half of the applied radio frequency. The effect of electron bounce-cyclotron resonance (EBCR) on the electron and ion dynamics is further investigated.

Higher Harmonics in Multipactor Induced Plasma Ionization Breakdown near a Dielectric Surface

De-Qi Wen et al.

Summary: This Letter reports the novel physics of higher harmonic (HH) generation of the normal electric field near a dielectric surface in multipactor induced plasma ionization breakdown, as determined by kinetic particle-in-cell simulations. The observed HH frequency is around ten times the fundamental rf driving frequency, but lower than the electron plasma frequency. A constructed theory indicates that stream plasma interaction-induced instability is the mechanism of HH generation in the collisional regime. The HH frequency and its corresponding growth rate of the HH oscillation amplitude from the theory are in good agreement with kinetic particle-in-cell simulations.

Parametric studies of stream instability-induced higher harmonics in plasma ionization breakdown near an emissive dielectric surface

De-Qi Wen et al.

Summary: In this work, the generation and evolution of higher harmonic (HH) electric fields in multipactor-coexisting plasma breakdown are comprehensively investigated using theoretical modeling and PIC simulations. The study reveals that the fundamental mechanism of HHs generation is stream-plasma instability, and increasing gas pressure significantly reduces the HH oscillations. The parameter space for HH appearance and the effect of driving frequency on HHs are also explored.

Susceptibility of multipactor discharges near a dielectric driven by a Gaussian-type transverse rf electric field

De-Qi Wen et al.

Summary: In this study, the special features of dielectric multipactor susceptibility under a Gaussian-type waveform are reported. The simulations show that the susceptibility boundary changes from two inclined lines to a closed curve as the waveform width decreases. It is found that reducing the waveform width significantly improves the absorption of rf power density by the multipactor discharge.

Particle-in-Cell Simulations With Fluid Metastable Atoms in Capacitive Argon Discharges: Electron Elastic Scattering and Plasma Density Profile Transition

De-Qi Wen et al.

Summary: Particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision (PIC/MCC) simulations are widely used for studying low-temperature plasma dynamics. In this study, the object-oriented PIC/MCC oopd1 code is benchmarked against the xpdp1 code, and the effects of various factors on plasma properties are analyzed. The results show that different conditions can lead to different plasma density profiles, and the presence of metastable atoms can significantly affect the plasma properties. The choice of electron scattering treatment also plays a role in determining plasma density and electron power absorption.

Electron power absorption in capacitively coupled neon-oxygen plasmas: a comparison of experimental and computational results

A. Derzsi et al.

Summary: Phase resolved optical emission spectroscopy (PROES) measurements combined with 1d3v particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collisions (PIC/MCC) simulations were used to study electron power absorption and excitation/ionization dynamics in neon-oxygen gas mixtures in capacitively coupled plasmas (CCPs). The study identified multiple operation regimes based on emission/excitation patterns, with localized bright emission features found at high pressures and high oxygen concentrations. The relative contributions of ambipolar and Ohmic electron power absorption were found to vary with discharge parameters, with the Ohmic power absorption enhanced by high collisionality at high pressures and high electronegativity at low pressures.

Observation of multilayer-structured discharge in plasma ionization breakdown

De-Qi Wen et al.

Summary: In this study, a multilayer-structured discharge (MSD) was observed in plasma ionization breakdown with multipactor presence through kinetic particle-in-cell simulations. This multilayer structure is originated by the response of ions to an electric field. The process involves electron diffusion, multipactor discharge, and the formation of locally high density profiles of ions and electrons, leading to the periodic formation of the MSD.

Li Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates electron power absorption dynamics and plasma uniformity in low pressure capacitively coupled RF discharges with structured electrodes. It is found that using a single ring-shaped rectangular trench near the reactor center can enhance local characteristics in a controllable manner, leading to improved plasma uniformity above the wafer.

Surface effects in a capacitive argon discharge in the intermediate pressure regime

J. T. Gudmundsson et al.

Summary: The study found that most ionization occurs near the plasma-sheath interfaces in a specific argon discharge, and in the absence of excited states, secondary electrons emitted from the electrodes play a significant role in the ionization process. When excited states and secondary electron emission due to neutral and ion impact on the electrodes are considered, the ionization process transitions from alpha-mode to gamma-mode.

2D particle-in-cell simulations of geometrically asymmetric low-pressure capacitive RF plasmas driven by tailored voltage waveforms

Li Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of two types of plasma asymmetry - geometric and electrical, on argon discharges, revealing that the plasma characteristics and DC self-bias generation behave differently when geometric symmetry is broken. By using tailored voltage waveforms, higher plasma densities can be achieved, but reduced plasma densities are found in valleys and sawtooth-down waveforms. Realistic secondary electron emission coefficients influence plasma density behavior, and tailored waveforms in geometrically asymmetric discharges lead to different charged particle energy distributions compared to symmetric cases.
