Study on discharge characteristics and improving surface hydrophobicity of epoxy resin by nanosecond pulse excited argon/hexamethyldisiloxane jet array

Zhiyan Liu et al.

Summary: In this paper, a one-dimensional argon jet array driven by nanosecond pulse power supply with hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) addition was used to form a super-hydrophobic film on the surface of epoxy resin, aiming to improve the surface hydrophobicity and insulating performance of insulating materials. The experimental results showed that with 0.04% HMDSO, the jet array achieved the best hydrophobic treatment effect on the epoxy resin surface. The apparent contact angle of the epoxy resin surface increased from 60.3 degrees to 150.0 degrees after 60 seconds of treatment, and the wettability did not change significantly beyond 60 seconds of treatment time. The surface morphology and chemical feature of the treated epoxy resin were analyzed, revealing that the surface was covered with dense coral-like particles in nanoscales, and the original organic functional groups were replaced by silicon-containing groups, resulting in an increase in the Si content from 0.4% to 28.0%. This study provides important references for the development of jet array as an efficient tool to enhance the surface hydrophobicity and insulating performance of insulating materials.

Periodical discharge regime transitions under long-term repetitive nanosecond pulses

Zheng Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the instability and regime transition of nanosecond repetitively pulsed (NRP) discharges. Experimental studies were conducted on needle-needle and needle-plane gaps in gas mixtures. It is found that the discharge regime transitions periodically from corona to glow to spark and back to corona in each pulse train. The duration of the spark regime can be controlled by adding oxygen and adjusting the output impedance of the power supply.

Fabrication and mechanical characterization of hybrid composite reinforced with nanoparticles of alumina and zirconia

Vivek Vij et al.

Summary: Metal matrix composites reinforced with nanoparticles are becoming increasingly important in the automobile and aerospace industry due to their high performance, lightweight, and excellent mechanical strength. In this study, a nanocomposite with aluminum matrix reinforced with alumina and zirconia nanoparticles was fabricated using the stir-casting technique. The microstructural and mechanical properties of the nanocomposite were investigated and compared with those of pure rolled aluminum. The results showed that the addition of nanoparticles significantly improved the tensile strength and hardness of the nanocomposite, while slightly reducing its flexural strength.

Nanosecond pulse-driven atmospheric-pressure plasmas for polymer surface modifications: Wettability performance, insulation evaluation and mechanisms

Summary: In this study, a nanosecond pulsed-driven Ar/Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (OMCTS) plasma jet was developed to modify the surface of epoxy resin (EP) and enhance its insulation performance. It was found that the surface roughness of EP increased and the conductivity improved after plasma treatment. The addition of a controlled amount of OMCTS improved the insulation and wettability performance, while excessive addition inhibited the plasma discharge.

A unipolar compact nanosecond pulsed power supply with high power factor for dielectric barrier discharge applications

Xiongmin Tang et al.

Summary: A unipolar high voltage pulsed power supply with power factor correction is proposed to generate uniform and diffuse plasma in dielectric barrier discharge loads. The power supply consists of a high voltage generating unit, a PFC unit, and a driving circuit. By introducing feedback clamping and reverse current blocking, repetitive nanosecond pulses are generated, resulting in a compact structure and high power factor.

Enhanced Pollution Flashover of a Slurry Coalescence Superhydrophobic Coating

Wenjie Xu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that superhydrophobic coatings are effective in preventing pollution flashover under high voltage conditions and can increase flashover voltage. The unique suppression mechanism of the superhydrophobic coating is primarily driven by the electrostatic force generated by the applied voltage, leading to the formation of coalesced slippery slurry droplets and expanded dry areas which contribute to higher flashover voltage. This suggests that superhydrophobic coatings have potential applications in enhancing the anti-pollution performance of insulators.

Influence of air addition on surface modification of polyethylene terephthalate treated by an atmospheric pressure argon plasma brush

Jiacun Wu et al.

Summary: Using an atmospheric pressure argon plasma brush with air addition can significantly improve the hydrophilicity of PET surfaces by increasing the production of oxygen atoms in the plasma. The increase in oxygen functional groups with higher air content leads to better hydrophilicity, as well as an increase in surface roughness.

Study on the self-cleaning phenomenon and anti-pollution flashover performance of micro-nanostructure superhydrophobic coating surface under a high humidity environment

Jinyu Chen et al.

Summary: The research on the anti-pollution flashover performance of superhydrophobic coating is still insufficient. This paper analyzes the various types of forces on the polluted particles accumulated on the coating surface, and establishes a new pollution flashover mechanism model. The experimental results show that the leakage current of superhydrophobic coating surface remains about 16.3 mu A after being completely wetted at any pollution degree.

Improving the surface flashover performance of epoxy resin by plasma treatment: a comparison of fluorination and silicon deposition under different modes

Jiyuan Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of different plasma modification methods to improve the flashover performance of Al2O3-ER samples, revealing that the DBD-F method has the greatest effect while the APPJ-F method has the poorest effect. Plasma fluorination and silicon deposition introduce shallow traps which play a crucial role in surface charge dissipation and flashover inhibition.
