Low-frequency shear Alfven waves at DIII-D: Theoretical interpretation of experimental observations

Ruirui Ma et al.

Summary: The linear properties of low-frequency shear Alfven waves were investigated based on the general fishbone-like dispersion relation (GFLDR), revealing the differences between beta-induced Alfven eigenmodes (BAEs) and low-frequency Alfven modes (LFAMs). The study demonstrated the solid predictive capability of the GFLDR in reproducing experimentally observed frequency spectrum patterns and enhancing the interpretative capability of experimental and numerical simulation results.

Beta-induced Alfven eigenmodes and geodesic acoustic modes in the presence of strong tearing activity during the current ramp-down on JET

G. Pucella et al.

Summary: The analysis of JET plasmas during the current ramp-down phase has found additional magnetic oscillations in pulses with large magnetic islands. These oscillations have frequencies ranging from 5 to 20 kHz, which are below the Alfven continuum gap and of the same order as the low-frequency gap caused by plasma compressibility. The presence of these oscillations is linked to the width of the magnetic island, suggesting a non-linear coupling mechanism with the tearing mode. The analysis also reveals the simultaneous presence of magnetic islands on different rational surfaces, supporting the hypothesis of different beta-induced Alfven eigenmodes (BAEs) associated with different magnetic islands.

Theoretical studies of low-frequency Alfven modes in tokamak plasmas

Ruirui Ma et al.

Summary: This study theoretically investigates the linear wave properties of low-frequency Alfven modes (LFAMs) observed in DIII-D tokamak experiments and finds that LFAM is a reactive-type kinetic ballooning mode instability under certain experimental conditions. The study also explains the observed spectral patterns and the dependence of instability drive on electron temperature in the experiments.

A Theoretical Framework of Chorus Wave Excitation

F. Zonca et al.

Summary: We propose a self-consistent theoretical framework to describe the evolution of chorus wave excitation and derive the expression for chorus chirping rate. Our study shows that chorus chirping corresponds to the maximization of wave-particle power exchange and different interpretations of chorus chirping can be reconciled within this framework.

Gyrokinetic simulation of low-frequency Alfvenic modes in DIII-D tokamak

G. J. Choi et al.

Summary: Global gyrokinetic simulations have found a beta-induced Alfven eigenmode and a low-frequency mode co-existing in the DIII-D tokamak experiments. The low-frequency mode can be excited without fast ions, has a structure consistent with experimental observations, and is not the conventional Alfven-acoustic eigenmode as shown by an antenna scan. The simulated mode structures and parametric dependencies are in agreement with experimental findings.

First principle-based multi-channel integrated modelling in support of the design of the Divertor Tokamak Test facility

Summary: An intensive integrated modeling work was conducted to support the design and scientific work program of the new Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility. Through this work, heating mix, device size, and fueling recommendations were defined, along with reference profiles for diagnostic design, estimates of neutron yields, and fast particle losses.
