Dew and fog as possible evolutionary drivers? The expansion of crustose and fruticose lichens in the Negev is respectively mainly dictated by dew and fog

Giora J. Kidron et al.

Summary: The expansion of lichens in the Negev is determined by dew and fog. Crustose lichens rely on dew while fruticose lichens rely on fog. Experimental results showed that fruticose lichens intercept more fog in windy conditions. This study provides insights into the expansion and adaptation of lichens in extreme desert environments.

Lithic cyanobacteria as bioindicators for dewless habitats within a dew desert

Giora J. Kidron et al.

Summary: This study investigated different elevational sites in the Negev Desert and found that cyanobacteria habitats have no dew, while lichen habitats have high dew concentrations. The results indicate that the variability in rock temperatures determines the amount of dew, and cyanobacteria are more suited for dewless habitats.
