Melatonin enhances stress tolerance in pigeon pea by promoting flavonoid enrichment, particularly luteolin in response to salt stress

Zhihua Song et al.

Summary: Melatonin enhances plant resistance to multiple stresses by promoting the biosynthesis of flavonoids. The expression of genes related to flavonoid biosynthesis pathways is significantly induced by melatonin treatment. This study provides new insights into the crosstalk between melatonin and flavonoids in enhancing plant tolerance to various stresses.

Deficiency in flavonoid biosynthesis genes CHS, CHI, and CHIL alters rice flavonoid and lignin profiles

Pui Ying Lam et al.

Summary: This study investigates the formation of tricin-incorporated lignin and its effects on cell wall properties in rice mutants deficient in early flavonoid biosynthetic genes. The results show that the mutants lacking CHS, CHI, and CHIL are depleted of extractable flavones and tricin-lignin in the cell walls. However, the cell wall saccharification efficiencies of these mutants are similar to that of the wild-type controls, suggesting the complex metabolic consequences of tricin pathway perturbations and the relationship between lignin profiles and cell wall properties.

Naringenin alleviates lead-induced changes in mungbean morphology with improvement in protein digestibility and solubility

Priya Sharma et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that naringenin alleviates lead-induced toxicity in mungbean by enhancing the non-enzymatic antioxidant potential, promoting protein accumulation and bioavailability. The most significant responses were observed at a concentration of 1 mM.

Transcriptome analysis reveals abscisic acid enhancing drought resistance by regulating genes related to flavonoid metabolism in pigeon pea

Wanlong Yang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that ABA can enhance drought resistance in pigeon pea by regulating the accumulation of flavonoids through secondary metabolism. ABA treatment led to significant changes in flavonoid biosynthesis pathways, with key enzyme genes being up-regulated. Transcriptome analysis revealed potential involvement of multiple transcription factors in the regulation of flavonoid accumulation, and RT-PCR confirmed their regulation by ABA. High Performance Liquid Chromatography analysis showed increased content of genistein, genistin and pterostilbene in pigeon pea treated with ABA under drought stress.

Genome-wide analysis and characterization of R2R3-MYB family in pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) and their functional identification in phenylpropanoids biosynthesis

Jie Yang et al.

Summary: This study identified 30 CpMYB genes involved in flavonoid and lignin biosynthesis in the pigeon pea genome, and classified them into five groups based on phylogenetic analysis. Additionally, 122 key enzyme genes related to flavonoid and lignin biosynthetic pathways were identified and mapped on 11 chromosomes. Expression profiles showed most genes were expressed in different tissues and responded significantly to MeJA, indicating their potential regulatory roles in flavonoid and lignin biosynthesis. Furthermore, the study proposed a discussion model for the regulatory networks involved in these biosynthetic pathways.

Naringenin reduces Cd-induced toxicity in Vigna radiata (mungbean)

Priya Sharma et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that naringenin significantly enhances protein bioavailability and solubility in mungbean, increasing Cd-stressed mungbean protein accumulation by 20%, bioavailability by 94%, and solubility by 12%. Naringenin also alleviates Cd toxicity-induced morphological and biochemical alterations, ultimately enhancing chlorophyll, fresh biomass, carbohydrate accumulation, and nonenzymatic antioxidant potential. However, naringenin reduces enzymatic antioxidants and increases lipid peroxidation in mungbean, suggesting a potential novel strategy for heavy metal stress tolerance in legumes.
