Large-scale and accurate non-destructive visual to near infrared spectroscopy-based assessment of the effect of rootstock on peach fruit internal quality

Ioannis S. Minas et al.

Summary: Development of accurate non-destructive tools using Vis-NIRS for rapid assessment of peach internal quality and maturity in the field was enabled by a novel rootstock x fruit developmental stage calibration approach. Regression statistics of the prediction models confirmed the effectiveness of this approach in accurately predicting dry matter content, soluble solids concentration, and index of absorbance difference with a single scan using a handheld Vis-NIRS sensor. The developed technology can improve preharvest and postharvest management decision making, ensuring high fruit quality and increasing consumer satisfaction throughout the supply chain.

Redefining the impact of preharvest factors on peach fruit quality development and metabolism: A review

Brendon M. Anthony et al.

Summary: One primary reason for the decline in worldwide peach consumption is poor fruit quality. Fruit quality is influenced by various factors, one of which is the level of maturity. The use of visual radiation and near-infrared spectroscopy provides a non-destructive method to assess maturity and internal fruit quality.

Peach for the future: A specialty crop revisited

George A. Manganaris et al.

Summary: This perspective review discusses the reasons for the recent decline in peach production and current trends in peach fruit production, including cultivar breeding, appropriate training system selection, and integrated management of diseases. Future developments include the selection of elite cultivars with high quality, high yield, and strong aroma, along with suitable rootstocks and canopy architecture to improve production efficiency. Additionally, there is a need to address the marketability of peach diversity and flavor potential, as well as the development of advanced non-destructive tools for determining fruit quality and maturity.

Accurate non-destructive prediction of peach fruit internal quality and physiological maturity with a single scan using near infrared spectroscopy

Ioannis S. Minas et al.

Summary: The development of precise and reliable near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)-based non-destructive tools has been a challenge for assessing the physicochemical properties of fleshy fruit. A novel protocol involving crop load and fruit developmental stage was used to calibrate multivariate NIRS prediction models, accurately estimating peach internal quality and maturity. The study found that preharvest factors such as crop load and canopy position significantly influenced peach quality and maturity, showing the potential for NIRS adaptation across the tree fruit supply chain.
