The Evolution and Functional Roles of miR408 and Its Targets in Plants

Yu Gao et al.

Summary: This review investigates the evolutionary pathway and regulatory mechanisms of miR408 in plants and summarizes its functions in regulating plant growth, development, and responses to various stresses. The study reveals that miR408 is an ancient and highly conserved microRNA that is widely distributed in different plants. miR408 regulates plant growth and development by down-regulating its target genes encoding blue copper proteins and by enhancing cellular antioxidants to improve stress tolerance.

Arabidopsis root responses to salinity depend on pectin modification and cell wall sensing

Nora Gigli-Bisceglia et al.

Summary: Due to its harmful effect on plant growth, salinity is becoming an increasingly serious problem for agriculture worldwide. In Arabidopsis thaliana, salt triggers the activation of pectin methyl esterase (PME) and leads to multiple salt-dependent responses. In addition, cell wall integrity plays a role in the functionality of salt-sensing mechanisms.

Maintenance of Cell Wall Integrity under High Salinity

Jianwei Liu et al.

Summary: Cell wall biosynthesis is a complex process in plants, and plants have evolved a CWI maintenance system to monitor and maintain cell wall status in response to environmental stresses. Salt stress can disrupt CWI severely, highlighting the importance of maintaining CWI for salt tolerance in plants.

The significance of ion-exchange properties of plant root cell walls for nutrient and water uptake by plants

Nataly Meychik et al.

Summary: Ion exchange and diffusion in plant root cell walls play key roles in the uptake of mineral nutrients and water, which are influenced by plant age, growth conditions, pH, and ionic strength of the external solution. Understanding the physico-chemical properties of plant cell walls is crucial for comprehending the complex processes of water and nutrient uptake.
