A root functional-structural model allows assessment of the effects of water deficit on water and solute transport parameters

Fabrice Bauget et al.

Summary: Root water uptake is driven by hydrostatic and osmotic forces. A hydraulic tree model was developed to integrate solute pumping and leak in root system architecture to explain water transport characteristics under water deficit conditions. Inverse modeling approach was used to determine radial and axial hydraulic conductivities under water deficit conditions. The model provides insights into the effects of water deficit on root transport parameters.

Maize root responses to drought stress depend on root class and axial position

Mohamed Y. Hazman et al.

Summary: This study found that under drought conditions, the growth of lateral roots was enhanced in maize genotypes SC3 and SC4, especially when plants were subjected to drought stress. This phenomenon helps plants to absorb water at deeper levels more effectively.

Phenotyping and modeling of root hydraulic architecture reveal critical determinants of axial water transport

Yann Boursiac et al.

Summary: This study investigates the water transport properties of highly branched root systems in adult Arabidopsis plants and reveals the overestimation of axial conductivities. By developing a hydraulic model and conducting simulations and experiments, the study also uncovers the growth and water transport mechanisms of Arabidopsis root systems. This approach is instrumental in understanding the root water transport phenotype of plants with complex alterations in root growth or transport functions.

Genome-wide dissection of changes in maize root system architecture during modern breeding

Wei Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, we identified candidate genes associated with maize root system architecture (RSA) through an association mapping panel. We also found that modern breeding has favored a steeply angled root system. Additionally, we confirmed the role of two auxin-related genes in regulating root angle and depth in maize.

Root metaxylem and architecture phenotypes integrate to regulate water use under drought stress

Christopher F. Strock et al.

Summary: Variation in root anatomy and architecture affects plant strategies of drought avoidance, with different legume species utilizing water differently based on their root structures. Root depth and architecture impact how plants cope with drought, highlighting the importance of understanding the interaction between root morphology and depth in determining plant responses to water stress.

Physiological roles of Casparian strips and suberin in the transport of water and solutes

Monica Calvo-Polanco et al.

Summary: The formation of Casparian strips and suberin deposition at the endodermis of plant roots play significant roles in restricting apoplastic transport of water and ions. Mutants with defective suberin deposition showed enhanced root hydraulic conductivity, while mutants with defective Casparian strips had increased solute leakage and reduced root hydraulic conductivity, leading to slower shoot growth. Ectopic suberin was found to partially compensate for defective Casparian strips, highlighting the importance of root apoplastic diffusion barriers in plant physiology.

Zinc regulates the hydraulic response of maize root under water stress conditions

Li Zhang et al.

Summary: Moderate zinc treatment promoted root growth and maintained root and leaf anatomy under water stress. It significantly increased root hydraulic conductivity, decreased antioxidant enzyme activity, and enhanced aquaporin gene expression. Overall, moderate zinc application improved maize's resistance to drought stress conditions.

Summary: A cell-resolution map of maize root was generated using single-cell RNA sequencing, revealing an alternative configuration of the tissue formative transcription factor SHR. The study shows that the SHR pathway controls the expansion of cortical tissue, impacting the anatomical complexity of plants.

Increased seminal root number associated with domestication improves nitrogen and phosphorus acquisition in maize seedlings

Alden C. Perkins et al.

Summary: The research shows that seminal roots can improve the acquisition of nitrogen and phosphorus in maize seedlings, with increased seed size associated with maize domestication possibly facilitating the increase in seminal root number. The study also suggests that the optimal number of seminal roots for nutrient acquisition in teosinte is constrained by its limited seed carbohydrate reserves.
