Genome-Wide Identification and Evolution Analysis of the Gibberellin Oxidase Gene Family in Six Gramineae Crops

Chenhao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comparative genomic study of GAox genes in six representative Gramineae crops, revealing their classification and evolutionary patterns. The results showed a relatively even distribution of GAox genes among the six crops, and their differentiation occurred before species differentiation. Gene duplication events, mainly through WGD/SD, played a role in the expansion of GAox genes. Additionally, GAox genes were found to respond to growth and development, stress, hormones, and light signals, with some genes showing significant upregulation under salt or cold stress conditions.

A (conditional) role for labdane-related diterpenoid natural products in rice stomatal closure

Juan Zhang et al.

Summary: Research suggests that labdane-related diterpenoid (LRD) phytoalexins in rice may act as a regulatory switch triggering stomatal closure, thereby affecting drought resistance.

Controlled hydroxylations of diterpenoids allow for plant chemical defense without autotoxicity

Jiancai Li et al.

Summary: Many plant specialized metabolites play a role in herbivore defense, but interrupting their biosynthetic pathways can lead to autotoxicity. Research has shown that tobacco plants avoid autotoxicity by regulating metabolic modifications, while achieving herbivore defense through inhibition of herbivore sphingolipid biosynthesis.

Bioactive diterpenoids impact the composition of the root-associated microbiome in maize (Zea mays)

Katherine M. Murphy et al.

Summary: This study found that maize diterpenoid metabolites, especially dolabralexins, influence rhizosphere bacterial communities. The rhizosphere microbiome of the wild-type and dolabralexin-deficient mutant Zman2 differed significantly, with the most significant changes observed in Alphaproteobacteria of the order Sphingomonadales. Metabolomics analyses support that these differences are attributed to the diterpenoid deficiency of the Zman2 mutant, rather than other large-scale metabolome alterations.

Getting back to the grass roots: harnessing specialized metabolites for improved crop stress resilience

Yezhang Ding et al.

Summary: Roots play a crucial role in plant productivity, but our understanding of the chemical language mediating key interactions through root specialized metabolites remains limited. Advances in plant genome assembly and metabolomics are enabling large-scale discoveries of specialized metabolic pathways for regulating root-biotic interactions.
