Bark Beetle Attack History Does Not Influence the Induction of Terpene and Phenolic Defenses in Mature Norway Spruce (Picea abies) Trees by the Bark Beetle-Associated Fungus Endoconidiophora polonica

Raimund Nagel et al.

Summary: This study found that mature Norway spruce trees can induce higher levels of terpenes and phenolics after being attacked by the spruce bark beetle and its associated fungus. However, the history of previous attacks did not influence the magnitude of these inductions.

Differential Regulation of an OsIspH1, the Functional 4-Hydroxy-3-Methylbut-2-Enyl Diphosphate Reductase, for Photosynthetic Pigment Biosynthesis in Rice Leaves and Seeds

Yeo Jin Lee et al.

Summary: The OsIspH1 gene plays a crucial role in plastid terpenoid biosynthesis in rice plants, controlling the synthesis of chlorophylls and carotenoids. OsIspH1 is highly expressed in all tissues at different developmental stages, while another gene, OsIspH2, is barely expressed. The complementary relations of two residues are important for enzyme activity.

The Sesquiterpene Synthase PtTPS5 Produces (1S,5S,7R,10R)-Guaia-4(15)-en-11-ol and (1S,7R,10R)-Guaia-4-en-11-ol in Oomycete-Infected Poplar Roots

Nathalie D. Lackus et al.

Summary: Pathogen infection induces the accumulation of terpenes, aromatic compounds, and fatty acids in poplar roots, and significantly upregulates a terpene synthase gene PtTPS5. Transcriptional analysis revealed that PtTPS5 likely contributes to the formation of specific compounds in response to pathogen infection.

Negative regulation of plastidial isoprenoid pathway by herbivore-induced β-cyclocitral in Arabidopsis thaliana

Sirsha Mitra et al.

Summary: Insect herbivory on plants can down-regulate the MEP pathway in Arabidopsis, affecting photosynthesis metabolites and increasing reactive oxygen species content. The resulting beta-cyclocitral signal inhibits DXS enzyme activity, leading to increased plant resistance against herbivory. These findings suggest a mechanism by which herbivore damage can modulate plant defense and growth processes.
