The phloem lectin PP2-A1 enhances aphid resistance by affecting aphid behavior and maintaining ROS homeostasis in cucumber plants

Yapeng Li et al.

Summary: Aphid attack often leads to decreased yields and deteriorated fruit quality in cucumber. The overexpression of CsPP2-A1 in cucumber plants resulted in resistance against aphids, with significantly lower colonization rates and reproductions compared to wild type and CsPP2-A1-RNAi plants. CsPP2-A1 played a crucial role in balancing reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plants, and its overexpression increased antioxidant enzyme levels, eliminating ROS and preventing their damage in cucumber. Furthermore, the overexpressed CsPP2-A1 cucumber plants showed nutritional imbalance for aphids and increased content of secondary metabolites, thereby preventing aphid attack.

Heterografted chrysanthemums enhance salt stress tolerance by integrating reactive oxygen species, soluble sugar, and proline

Wenjie Li et al.

Summary: This study reveals the increased salt tolerance mechanism of heterografted chrysanthemums by using Artemisia annua as rootstock. The roots of heterografted chrysanthemums enrich Na+ under high salt stress, reducing Na+ toxicity in the scion. They also alleviate high Na+ stress through enhanced enzyme activity, downregulation of gene expression related to reactive oxygen species accumulation, accumulation of soluble sugars and proline, and upregulation of gene expression related to heat shock proteins. The leaves of heterografted chrysanthemums respond to low Na+ stress by increasing enzyme activity and soluble sugar and proline contents. Self-grafted and self-rooted plants, on the other hand, cannot integrate these responses to salt stress and exhibit a salt-sensitive phenotype.

Effect of Salt Stress on Growth and Physiological Properties of Asparagus Seedlings

Xin Guo et al.

Summary: Salt stress significantly inhibited the growth of two asparagus cultivars, with JL1 showing a greater decrease than Apollo. Salt stress increased the Na+ content and decreased the K+ content and K+/Na+ ratio in both cultivars. Apollo had a smaller increase in Na+ and decrease in K+ content, and maintained a relatively high K+/Na+ ratio. Under salt stress, proline, soluble sugar, and protein contents increased in Apollo, and antioxidant enzyme activities gradually increased, while JL1 showed different changes in these parameters. Apollo maintained a relatively high K+/Na+ ratio, osmotic adjustment ability, and antioxidant defense capability at the late stage of salt stress, indicating higher salt tolerance compared to JL1.

Overexpression of CsPP2-A1 in cucumber enhanced salt tolerance by participating ABA-JA signaling pathway and antioxidant system

Changxia Du et al.

Summary: CsPP2-A1 is a gene related to plant salt tolerance in cucumber, and its overexpression can enhance the resistance of cucumber and Arabidopsis to salt stress and regulate the antioxidant system. Transcriptome sequencing analysis also revealed that CsPP2-A1 is involved in the MAPK pathway, ABA and JA signaling pathway, as well as stress adaptation and response.
