The ties of brotherhood between japonica and indica rice for regional adaptation

Man Wang et al.

Summary: The study conducted a genome-wide selective-sweep analysis of 655 japonica and 1,205 indica rice accessions, identifying 5,636 non-synonymous SNPs fixed in at least one subspecies. These SNPs were classified into three groups and their relation to yield-related traits, including heading date, was documented. Evidence for selection acting on these groups, as well as the role of specific genes in temperature adaptability, was also demonstrated.

The peptide SCOOP12 acts on reactive oxygen species homeostasis to modulate cell division and elongation in Arabidopsis primary root

Marie-Charlotte Guillou et al.

Summary: The small secreted peptide SCOOP12 regulates root growth through modification of cell division and elongation processes correlated with changes in reactive oxygen species homeostasis and cell wall structure. It has been found that SCOOP12 can promote defense response against pathogens and be involved in root development. The abundance of SCOOP12 affects the production of reactive oxygen species and cell wall modifications in roots. Peroxidases may act as potential downstream targets of SCOOP12 to regulate H2O2 production.

Natural variations of ZmSRO1d modulate the trade-off between drought resistance and yield by affecting ZmRBOHC-mediated stomatal ROS production in maize

Huajian Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, the molecular regulation of maize drought resistance was investigated through a genome-wide association study. It was found that the ZmSRO1d-R allele has a dual effect on drought resistance and grain yields. Interestingly, this allele was selected against during maize domestication and modern breeding, but its reintroduction into modern maize cultivars could contribute to food security under drought stress caused by global climate change.

Pretreatment of seeds with hydrogen peroxide improves deep-sowing tolerance of wheat seedlings

Askim Hediye Sekmen Cetinel et al.

Summary: This study found that pretreatment with H2O2 can improve deep-sowing tolerance in wheat by promoting internode elongation, regulating antioxidant enzyme activities, and upregulating the expression of cell wall-loosening protein genes.

Targeted mutagenesis of POLYAMINE OXIDASE 5 that negatively regulates mesocotyl elongation enables the generation of direct-seeding rice with improved grain yield

Yusong Lv et al.

Summary: It was found that OsPAO5 gene expression in rice seedlings is enhanced by light and inhibited by darkness. Mutants created using CRISPR/Cas9 technology exhibited longer mesocotyls, released less H2O2, and synthesized more ethylene, resulting in higher and more uniform emergence rate, showing the potential for direct seeding. Knocking out OsPAO5 can significantly increase grain weight, grain number, and yield potential, providing a novel strategy for breeding elite rice varieties for direct seeding.

Arabidopsis Mitochondrial Transcription Termination Factor mTERF2 Promotes Splicing of Group IIB Introns

Kwanuk Lee et al.

Summary: Chloroplast-localized mTERF2 plays a crucial role in plant development, with its complete loss of function leading to embryo lethality and its reduction affecting plant development and chlorophyll content. Additionally, mTERF2 is required for the splicing of group IIB introns of ycf3 and rps12, highlighting its importance in regulating gene expression in chloroplasts.

A rice mTERF protein V14 sustains photosynthesis establishment and temperature acclimation in early seedling leaves

Man Wang et al.

Summary: The study identified an mTERF gene V14 through fine mapping, revealing its critical role in chloroplast development and impact on the appropriate processing of rpoB-rpoC1-rpoC2 precursors and expression of certain photosynthetic proteins. The study also showed stage-specific and thermo-sensitive regulation by V14, as well as possible functional redundancy with three V14 homologous genes. These findings expand the understanding of rice mTERFs' molecular functions and highlight their contributions to photosynthesis establishment and temperature acclimation.

mTERF18 and ATAD3 are required for mitochondrial nucleoid structure and their disruption confers heat tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana

Minsoo Kim et al.

Summary: The study found that mutations in the Arabidopsis thaliana mTERF18/SHOT1 gene enable plants to better tolerate heat and oxidative stresses, potentially due to lower ROS production in mitochondria. Additionally, the research revealed that the SHOT1 protein binds DNA and localizes to mitochondrial nucleoids, disruption of which affects the accumulation of oxidative phosphorylation complexes.

Rapid Identification of QTL for Mesocotyl Length in Rice Through Combining QTL-seq and Genome-Wide Association Analysis

Yamei Wang et al.

Summary: This study identified 14 QTL associated with mesocotyl length in rice through QTL-seq and GWAS, with some QTL related to known genes or QTL and others potentially novel. Six of the identified QTL were stable across multiple populations, suggesting potential value for genetic improvement in rice direct-seeding cultivation.
