Plant defense strategies against attack by multiple herbivores

Maite Fernandez de Bobadilla et al.

Summary: Plants have the ability to recognize their attackers and adjust their physiology to defend against multiple herbivores. However, little is known about how plants defend against multiple attackers, which is a major gap in plant science research.

Linalool Activates Oxidative and Calcium Burst and CAM3-ACA8 Participates in Calcium Recovery in Arabidopsis Leaves

Chunyang Jiao et al.

Summary: Linalool enhances H2O2 and intracellular calcium concentrations in Arabidopsis mesophyll cells, and CAM3-ACA8 is involved in reducing intracellular calcium concentrations, allowing cells to recover their resting state. Additionally, the expression of JA-related genes and defense genes is enhanced when treated with linalool, potentially strengthening plant defense.

How do plants sense volatiles sent by other plants?

Francesco Loreto et al.

Summary: Plants communicate with animals and other plants through the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but little is known about how plants perceive these compounds. Researchers propose a multiple system of VOC perception, suggesting that stress-induced VOCs bind to odorant-binding proteins and are transported to unknown receptors, leading to metabolic or behavioral changes. Deciphering how plants listen to their neighbors' communication could provide insight into using VOCs as a tool for plant defense strategies when faced with various stresses.

Ethyl Vinyl Ketone Activates K+ Efflux to Regulate Stomatal Closure by MRP4-Dependent eATP Accumulation Working Upstream of H2O2 Burst in Arabidopsis

Junqing Gong et al.

Summary: Plants use EVK to regulate stomatal closure, thereby limiting water loss and improving pathogen resistance. EVK induces stomatal closure by increasing guard cell K+ efflux. This study also found that eATP and H2O2 play important roles in EVK-regulated K+ efflux.

CML8 and GAD4 function in (Z)-3-hexenol-mediated defense by regulating γ-aminobutyric acid accumulation in Arabidopsis

Chunyang Jiao et al.

Summary: This study revealed the mechanism by which (Z)-3-hexenol enhances plant resistance to insect attacks by increasing GABA content in Arabidopsis leaves, and investigated the roles of CML8 and GAD4 in this process.

The plant NADPH oxidase RBOHD is required for microbiota homeostasis in leaves

Sebastian Pfeilmeier et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the maintenance of leaf microbiota homeostasis in Arabidopsis thaliana plants requires the involvement of the NADPH oxidase RBOHD, as its absence leads to enrichment of opportunistic pathogens. The composition of plant microbiota is greatly influenced by the plant immune system, highlighting the importance of both immune system and microbial community in maintaining plant health.
