Effects of stand types on recreational preferences of society in the Sub-Alpine Zone, northern Turkey

Tugrul Varol et al.

Summary: This study examines the influence of different stand types on visitors' preferences for recreational activities in the surrounding areas of Uluyayla Natural Recreation Site in Bartin, northern Turkey from 1993 to 2018. The study finds that unmanaged and moderately treated stands are more preferred by visitors for recreational purposes, compared to previously managed stands. The preferences for recreational activities have also changed over the years, with an increasing trend observed for hiking, trekking, camping, and hunting. The study highlights the importance of considering visitors' needs when planning and managing forests for recreational purposes.

Effects of light transmittance on growth and biomass of understory seedlings in mixed pine-beech forests

Ferhat Kara

Summary: This study investigates the effects of light transmittance on the growth of seedlings in mixed forests, specifically focusing on Scots pine, black pine, and Oriental beech. The results show that light transmittance significantly affects seedling height, aboveground biomass, and belowground biomass, and different tree species exhibit different responses. Biomass models were also developed for each species to estimate the biomass of seedlings.

Stomatal regulation and water potential variation in European beech: challenging the iso/anisohydry concept

Christoph Leuschner et al.

Summary: The study investigates the iso/anisohydric continuum in beech trees and finds that beech is a strictly anisohydric species. The research also reveals that beech leaves exhibit significant diurnal and seasonal variation in water potential, partially due to their low leaf tissue elasticity.

Overyielding in mixed pine forests with belowground complementarity: impacts on understory

Daphne Lopez-Marcos et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of mixed versus monospecific stands of Pinus sylvestris L. and P. pinaster Ait. on productivity, understory, and soil water and fertility in North-Central Spain. The results showed a positive effect of pine mixture on productivity at a smaller spatial scale, with no negative impact on understory richness. The greater space-use efficiency of both Pinus species in mixtures was related to soil water and fertility niche complementarity.

Similar tree species richness-productivity response but differing effects on carbon stocks and timber production in eastern US and continental Spain

Andres Bravo-Oviedo et al.

Summary: The study found that the relationship between tree species richness and aboveground productivity shows a unimodal response in grasslands but to a lesser extent in forests. Increasing species richness can lead to higher carbon stocks in forests but does not necessarily result in higher timber volume production. Different factors, such as abiotic factors and management regimes, may influence this relationship.

Growth resistance and resilience of mixed silver fir and Norway spruce forests in central Europe: Contrasting responses to mild and severe droughts

Alessandra Bottero et al.

Summary: The study found that silver fir exhibited higher resistance and resilience to mild droughts compared to spruce, with species interactions and management-related factors playing a crucial role in responses to severe droughts. Adjusting species composition, tree size distribution, and stand density can mitigate the negative impacts of severe droughts on mixed silver fir-Norway spruce forests.
