Polish Cryobanks: Research and Conservation of Plant Genetic Resources

Ewa Zimnoch-Guzowska et al.

Summary: The use of liquid nitrogen (LN) in plant gene banks is currently limited, with only 20 out of 500 banks in Europe utilizing cryogenic temperatures. Poland has gradually developed its gene banking system since the 1990s, mainly focusing on seed collection. This review provides the first summary of gene cryobank activities and resources in Poland, highlighting the use of LN in plant protection programs and presenting the characteristics of four existing gene cryobanks in the country.

Polish Contribution to Global Research on Somatic Embryogenesis

Anna Mikula et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the achievements of Polish research groups in establishing somatic embryogenesis (SE) systems for various plant species and model organisms. The systems utilized genomic tools, physiological methods, and cytological techniques to advance our understanding of the genetic and epigenetic elements involved in the induction of embryogenic cells in plants. The research has also led to the development of simplified systems for cytological analysis and broad applications in biotechnology and clonal propagation.
