Estimating intraseasonal intrinsic water-use efficiency from high-resolution tree-ring δ13C data in boreal Scots pine forests

Yu Tang et al.

Summary: We estimated high-resolution intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) from tree-ring delta C-13 analysis and compared it with iWUE derived from gas exchange and eddy covariance data. The intraseasonal iWUE aligned well with the other measurements, but there were differences in the year-to-year patterns. We found that iWUE(iso) was overestimated due to postphotosynthetic delta C-13 enrichment and nonexplicit inclusion of certain terms in the model.

Estimating intra-seasonal photosynthetic discrimination and water use efficiency using δ13C of leaf sucrose in Scots pine

Yu Tang et al.

Summary: Comparison of different leaf carbon pools' assimilate δC-13 values, Picarro measurements, and modelled data highlights the potential for misinterpretation when analyzing bulk organic matter δC-13. Sucrose, in comparison to other tested carbon pools such as total organic matter (TOM) and water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC), is superior in accurately recording seasonal trends and absolute values of assimilate δC-13. This emphasizes the advantage of using sucrose δC-13 to understand plant physiological responses in depth and warns about the misinterpretation that can arise from deriving iWUE and environmental signals from bulk organic matter δC-13.

Cutting tree rings into time slices: how intra-annual dynamics of wood formation help decipher the space-for-time conversion

Gonzalo Perez-de-Lis et al.

Summary: The study examined the spatio-temporal relationship in tree rings during cell enlargement and wall thickening processes, finding that wall thickening progresses more rapidly than enlargement. Increasing the number of sectors above a certain threshold has limited effect on time resolution, with overlapping sector formation reducing synchronicity and stability, especially in narrow rings and during wall thickening.

Explicitly accounting for needle sugar pool size crucial for predicting intra-seasonal dynamics of needle carbohydrates δ18O and δ13C

Kersti Leppa et al.

Summary: In this study, the needle sugar isotopic compositions (delta O-18 and delta C-13) of boreal Scots pine were investigated over two growing seasons. A leaf-level dynamic model was built to predict the isotopic compositions, taking into account environmental conditions and isotope fractionation processes. The model results showed good agreement with observed data, indicating that relative humidity and intercellular to ambient CO2 concentration ratio were the main drivers of isotopic variability. However, the variability of needle sugar isotopic compositions was reduced on diel and intra-seasonal timescales due to the presence of a large needle sugar pool. Consideration of temperature-sensitive fractionation factors and mesophyll resistance was crucial for interpreting leaf-level isotopic signals.

The unknown third - Hydrogen isotopes in tree-ring cellulose across Europe

V. Vitali et al.

Summary: This study presents the first comprehensive assessment of climatological and physiological information recorded by hydrogen isotope ratios in tree-ring cellulose. The study found that the strength of the delta H-2(c) climate signal varied across the continent and was stronger for Pinus than for Quercus, with different relationships with tree growth and hydrology. The recorded information by delta H-2(c) differs significantly from that of delta O-18(c) and has a stronger physiological component, providing new insights into trees' carbon allocation mechanisms and responses to stress conditions.

Effects of variable temperature and moisture conditions on respiration and nonstructural carbohydrate dynamics of tree roots

Kira Ryhti et al.

Summary: In warming climates, soil water content plays an important role in belowground carbon dynamics in boreal forests. This study found that both root respiration and nonstructural carbohydrate concentrations were affected by soil water availability, with soil being more sensitive to drought than roots. Additionally, root respiration was negatively associated with root fructose and glucose concentrations, while root fructose, glucose, and sucrose concentrations were negatively associated with soil water content due to their role in osmoregulation.

Tree organ growth and carbon allocation dynamics impact the magnitude and δ13C signal of stem and soil CO2 fluxes

Yu Tang et al.

Summary: Incomplete knowledge of carbon allocation dynamics in trees hinders accurate modeling and future predictions of tree growth. This study reveals the significant effect of phloem and root non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) concentrations on tree growth, as well as the strengthened carbon allocation to stem or roots under high carbon demands. By including compound-specific concentration and delta C-13 analysis, this study emphasizes the importance of considering carbon allocation dynamics in tree growth models.

Mobile forms of carbon in trees: metabolism and transport

Pia Guadalupe Dominguez et al.

Summary: Plants make up 80% of Earth's biomass, with wood accounting for two-thirds of this biomass. Carbon transport from photosynthetic tissues is essential for wood formation. This review discusses the molecules and mechanisms involved in carbon transport in trees, focusing on the distribution and synthesis of different carbon-carrying compounds. The study also highlights the annual cycle of growth and dormancy in trees, evolutionary drivers behind diversity in carbon-carrying molecules, and possible future research directions in this field.

Linking canopy-scale mesophyll conductance and phloem sugar δ13C using empirical and modelling approaches

Pauliina Schiestl-Aalto et al.

Summary: Interpreting phloem carbohydrate or xylem tissue carbon isotopic composition as measures of water-use efficiency or past tree productivity requires a deep understanding of factors altering isotopic composition in the pathway from ambient air to phloem contents and tree ring. A dynamic model describing leaf photosynthetic pathways was formulated, with different mesophyll conductance descriptions, to predict responses under different weather conditions and simulate delta C-13 variations. The model successfully predicted drought responses and post-drought changes in phloem sugar delta C-13, suggesting its suitability for predicting leaf processes from phloem isotopic composition.

Global tree intrinsic water use efficiency is enhanced by increased atmospheric CO2 and modulated by climate and plant functional types

Justin M. Mathias et al.

Summary: A meta-analysis of carbon and oxygen isotopes from tree ring chronologies across 10 biomes reveals a global increase in tree intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE) of approximately 40% since 1901, largely driven by the increase in atmospheric CO2. Increases in net photosynthesis (A(net)) dominated the observed increased iWUE in about 83% of cases, with reductions in stomatal conductance (g(s)) occurring in the remaining approximately 17%.

Why trees grow at night

Roman Zweifel et al.

Summary: The study found that trees mainly grow at night and that high VPD limits radial stem growth, with little growth during daylight hours. However, some trees are able to grow in moderately dry conditions with low VPD. Species-specific differences in growth dynamics affect the annual growth increment.
