OsADK1, a novel kinase regulating arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis in rice

Rui Guo et al.

Summary: A novel kinase gene named OsADK1 was identified in rice, which plays an important role in arbuscule development. Mutations in OsADK1 resulted in a significantly low colonization rate of rice roots by AM fungus, and the observed arbuscules were arrested at an early phase. Mutation of OsADK1 greatly affected the AM symbiotic program.

KIN3 impacts arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis and promotes fungal colonisation in Medicago truncatula

Thomas B. Irving et al.

Summary: This study characterized the symbiotic phenotypes of four Medicago truncatula mutants and identified two genes, RAM1 and KIN3, involved in mycorrhization. The results showed that RAM1 acts upstream of KIN3 and that KIN3 is involved in suppressing plant defenses and promoting root colonization. KIN3 also plays an essential role in the symbiotic response to soil nitrogen levels.

PHOSPHATE STARVATION RESPONSE transcription factors enable arbuscular mycorrhiza symbiosis

Debatosh Das et al.

Summary: Arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) is a widespread symbiosis between roots of land plants and Glomeromycotina fungi, which plays a crucial role in plant phosphate uptake and ecosystem health. The study reveals that PHR transcription factors, especially PHR2, promote the development and maintenance of AM symbiosis by regulating gene expression related to pre-contact signaling, root colonization, and AM function.

Innovation and appropriation in mycorrhizal and rhizobial Symbioses

Dapeng Wang et al.

Summary: The review focuses on the progress in understanding the evolution and differences between mycorrhizal and root nodule symbioses in plants. It highlights the importance of plants being able to distinguish between beneficial symbionts and potential pathogens for their survival. The overlap in signaling pathways and infection components of these symbioses reflects their evolutionary relatedness, while the different outputs, phosphate uptake versus N fixation, require fundamentally different components and regulators.

A phosphate starvation response-regulated receptor-like kinase, OsADK1, is required for mycorrhizal symbiosis and phosphate starvation responses

Jincai Shi et al.

Summary: In this study, we identified 520 direct target genes for the rice transcription factor OsPHR1/2/3 during arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis. These genes are involved in strigolactone biosynthesis, transcriptional reprogramming, and bidirectional nutrient exchange. We also discovered that OsPHR2 can directly bind to the promoter region of Arbuscule Development Kinase 1 (OsADK1) to activate its transcription, which is required for mycorrhizal colonization and arbuscule development. Furthermore, we found that OsADK1 may play a role in plant phosphate starvation responses. Our study confirms the crucial role of OsPHR1/2/3 as master regulators of mycorrhizal-related genes and identifies a new receptor-like kinase (RLK) involved in AM symbiosis and plant phosphate starvation responses.

Distinct ankyrin repeat subdomains control VAPYRIN locations and intracellular accommodation functions during arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis

Penelope L. Lindsay et al.

Summary: VAPYRIN is a plant protein required for symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Here the authors identify VAPYRIN domains that control subcellular targeting and protein-protein interactions and propose that VAPYRIN acts in the nucleus and cytoplasm to coordinate signaling and intracellular arbuscule accommodation.

A phosphate starvation response-centered network regulates mycorrhizal symbiosis

Jincai Shi et al.

Summary: Most land plants acquire phosphorus from soil through direct phosphate uptake pathway via root hairs and epidermis, or through an indirect pathway via mycorrhizal symbiosis. The gene regulatory network between transcription factors and mycorrhizal symbiosis-related genes is controlled by the conserved P-sensing pathway centered on phosphate starvation response (PHR) transcription factors. SPX-domain proteins and OsPHR2 play crucial roles in regulating symbiosis-related genes during mycorrhizal infection.

A mis-regulated cyclic nucleotide-gated channel mediates cytosolic calcium elevation and activates immunity in Arabidopsis

Chunhui Zhao et al.

Summary: The study reveals the critical role of calcium (Ca2+) as a second messenger in plant immunity, with mutations in the CNGC20 gene affecting the cells' disease resistance responses. The research also highlights the mechanism by which CNGC20 influences PTI and ETI responses, emphasizing the importance of tight control of the CNGC20 calcium ion channel in immune regulation.

Lipid exchanges drove the evolution of mutualism during plant terrestrialization

Melanie K. Rich et al.

Summary: Symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi benefits plant nutrition and elicits a conserved transcriptomic response among land plants, including activation of lipid metabolism. Transfer of lipids from liverwort to AMF is regulated by the transcription factor WRINKLED, and the formation of arbuscules is essential for mutualism. The symbiotic transfer of lipids is orthologous across land plants, indicating the presence of mutualism with AMF in the most recent ancestor of land plants 450 million years ago.
