Arabidopsis RNA processing body components LSM1 and DCP5 aid in the evasion of translational repression during Cauliflower mosaic virus infection

Gesa Hoffmann et al.

Summary: Viral infections cause significant stress on cellular RNA and trigger RNA surveillance pathways. In this study, PB components in Arabidopsis were found to be co-opted by the Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) to facilitate viral replication and translation. This pro-viral role was not associated with RNA decay but instead helped in viral RNA translation. Dysfunctions in PB components exposed the virus to RNA silencing, similar to what has been observed in transgenes. Our study highlights the importance of PB components in maintaining efficient virus translation and their unique dependence on RNA silencing.

ADAR1 limits stress granule formation through both translation-dependent and translation-independent mechanisms

Giulia A. Corbet et al.

Summary: Stress granules (SGs) are cytoplasmic assemblies formed during the integrated stress response, composed of RNA and proteins that interact with mRNPs. ADAR1 plays a role in limiting SG formation independently of translation inhibition, and its binding activity restricts RNA-RNA and/or RNA-protein interactions necessary for recruitment to SGs. This has implications for the role of ADAR1 in the antiviral response, particularly during viral infection when ADAR1 expression is induced.

Higher-order organization of biomolecular condensates

Summary: A guiding principle in biology is the organization of biochemical reactions in space and time, often achieved through liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) to generate dynamic and reactive biomolecular condensates. These condensates, containing a complex mixture of proteins and nucleic acids, form specific internal architectures critical for specific biological functions.
