Strong variations and shifting mechanisms of altitudal diversity and abundance patterns in soil oribatid mites (Acari: Oribatida) on the Changbai Mountain, China

Dandan Liu et al.

Summary: Elevation and vegetation type have strong effects on the species composition and diversity of soil oribatid mites. Soil oribatid mite assemblages exhibit a distinct vertical distribution pattern and are coupled with different aboveground vegetation types. Changes in aboveground vegetation under future climate change will cause shifts in soil fauna.

Drivers of Collembola assemblages along an altitudinal gradient in northeast China

Zhijing Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the diversity and community composition of Collembola along altitudinal gradients in Changbai Mountain. The results suggest that altitude, local habitat-related factors, and climatic variables are important drivers of changes in Collembola communities. Specifically, soil and litter carbon-to-nitrogen ratio and soil pH have positive correlations with Collembola communities at different altitudes.

Joint effects of environmental filtering and dispersal limitation on the species assemblage of the Tibetan Plateau

Jiekun He et al.

Summary: In this study, the association between species occurrence on the Tibetan Plateau and their morphological, ecological, or evolutionary constraints was investigated. The study revealed that species on the Tibetan Plateau exhibited higher cold tolerance and a faster rate of niche evolution compared to non-Plateau species. The species assemblage on the Tibetan Plateau was shaped by both environmental filtering and dispersal limitation. These findings provide significant insights into the community assembly processes in high-altitude ecosystems and their sensitivity to global warming.

Embracing mountain microbiome and ecosystem functions under global change

Jianjun Wang et al.

Summary: Mountains are crucial for maintaining habitat heterogeneity, biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and providing services to humans. Over the past decade, there has been significant progress in studying microbial diversity on mountainsides. Microbial communities exhibit climate zonation along elevational gradients, and species richness patterns are driven by deterministic processes influenced by abiotic and biotic factors. Current research is shifting towards understanding the mechanisms shaping microbial biogeographical patterns and their responses to global change.

How soil meso-/macro-faunas orchestrate ecosystem multifunctionality under different artificial disturbance conditions in the Changbai Mountain region, China

Xinchang Kou et al.

Summary: Biodiversity-ecosystem function relationships have been widely studied in the field of microorganisms. This study investigated the relationships among soil macro/meso faunal diversity, soil functions, and ecosystem multifunctionality under different disturbance conditions. The results revealed a positive relationship between soil meso-faunal diversity and ecosystem multifunctionality, while correlations between macro-faunal diversity and ecosystem multifunctionality decreased with increasing disturbance intensities.

Mid-elevational Peaks in Diversity of Ground-dwelling Arthropods with High Species Turnover on the Colorado Plateau

Derek Uhey et al.

Summary: Research along elevational gradients in northern Arizona revealed that ground-dwelling arthropods show peak diversity at mid-elevations, with abundance, richness, and diversity indexes peaking in this region. Community composition varies significantly across the gradient, driven by shifts from ants dominating low to mid elevations, and beetles dominating high elevations. Population turnover is high among sites, suggesting vulnerability to environmental change, especially at lower elevations in arid regions.

Soil pH determines bacterial distribution and assembly processes in natural mountain forests of eastern China

Yingying Ni et al.

Summary: The study found that plant phylogeny accounts for a small fraction of the variation in bacterial community composition, while soil pH is the primary determinant, independently explaining 68.6% and 69.9% of the variation in bacterial diversity and composition. The analysis showed that bacterial community assembly is more phylogenetically clustered with increasing soil pH.
