Different bacterial co-occurrence patterns and community assembly between rhizosphere and bulk soils under N addition in the plant-soil system

Jie Wang et al.

Summary: Our study investigated the effect of short-term nitrogen (N) addition on the co-occurrence patterns and assembly processes of bacterial communities in the rhizosphere. We found that N addition significantly altered bacterial community diversity and composition in the rhizosphere soil, and the co-occurrence networks in the rhizosphere were more complex compared to the bulk soil. The establishment of the bacterial community in the rhizosphere was mainly influenced by deterministic processes, while the bulk soil showed a transition from stochastic to deterministic processes. N addition also affected the release of root exudates and soil NH4+-N levels, which played a role in shaping the structure of the rhizosphere bacterial community and co-occurrence networks.

Nitrogen addition slows litter decomposition accompanied by accelerated manganese release: A five-year experiment in a subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest

Yong Peng et al.

Summary: Litter decomposition is a crucial process for carbon and nutrient cycling in ecosystems, and it is influenced by nitrogen deposition. A five-year field experiment in a high nitrogen deposition area in China's West China Rain Zone revealed that nitrogen addition inhibited the late-stage mass loss and degradation rate of litter decomposition, particularly affecting cellulose and lignin degradation. Nitrogen addition also influenced the concentration and release of nutrients during decomposition, with significant acceleration of manganese release. The slowed decomposition in this forest is expected to reduce soil CO2 emissions and increase soil carbon content.

Stoichiometric imbalance of soil carbon and nutrients drives microbial community structure under long-term fertilization

Yaping Huang et al.

Summary: Fertilization affects soil microbial community by changing soil organic carbon and nutrient availability. Inorganic and organic fertilization lead to stoichiometric imbalances in soil and microbial biomass, driving shifts in microbial community structure. Soil pH and C, N, P stoichiometric imbalances are key factors influencing the composition of soil microbial communities after long-term fertilization.

Altered plant carbon partitioning enhanced forest ecosystem carbon storage after 25 years of nitrogen additions

Brooke A. Eastman et al.

Summary: Decades of atmospheric nitrogen deposition in the northeastern USA have enhanced forest carbon sink by shifting carbon partitioning and reducing the cost of nitrogen acquisition. This study demonstrates how plant responses to nitrogen additions may result in greater carbon storage in both vegetation and soil at the watershed scale.

C:N:P stoichiometry responses to 10 years of nitrogen addition differ across soil components and plant organs in a subtropical Pleioblastus amarus forest

Zengyan Li et al.

Summary: Long-term nitrogen addition significantly impacted the nutrient stoichiometry in soil and plant components of a bamboo forest ecosystem. The responses of rhizosphere and bulk soil stoichiometry differed due to the influence of plant roots, leading to changes in soil microbial biomass and enzyme activity. The chronic input of nitrogen deposition caused differences in stoichiometry between plant and soil, potentially decoupling plants from soils.

Soil extracellular enzyme activities and the abundance of nitrogen-cycling functional genes responded more to N addition than P addition in an Inner Mongolian meadow steppe

Hong Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus addition on soil microbial functions and nutrient cycling in a meadow steppe, revealing that nitrogen addition alleviates microbial demand for nitrogen but increases microbial carbon limitation and soil nitrogen loss potential. Phosphorus addition, on the other hand, suppresses the abundance of ammonia oxidizing bacteria and soil nitrogen loss potential. The abundance of ammonia oxidizing bacteria and denitrifier genes in soils showed different responses to treatments and seasons.

Different responses of soil bacterial and fungal communities to nitrogen deposition in a subtropical forest

Jianqing Wang et al.

Summary: China has experienced a widespread increase in N deposition due to intensive anthropogenic activities, particularly in subtropical regions. The effects of long-term N deposition on soil bacterial and fungal abundance, diversity, and community composition show that fungi are more sensitive to N deposition, and soil N availability and pH are the most influential factors.

Nitrogen addition stimulates soil aggregation and enhances carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems of China: A meta-analysis

Xiaofei Lu et al.

Summary: The study highlights that nitrogen enrichment can increase the diameter of soil aggregates, proportion of macroaggregates, and affect macroaggregate C significantly; in addition, N enrichment can lead to soil acidification and is correlated with aggregate C. Despite the varied effects on soil aggregation depending on ecosystem type and fertilization regime, overall, it enhances the formation of soil aggregates and their sequestration of organic C.

Long-term nitrogen input alters plant and soil bacterial, but not fungal beta diversity in a semiarid grassland

Weixing Liu et al.

Summary: The effect of nitrogen input on beta-diversity differs among plant, soil bacterial, and fungal communities. Plant beta-diversity decreases linearly with increasing nitrogen addition due to environmental filtering, while soil bacterial beta-diversity first increases then decreases with corresponding changes in environmental heterogeneity. Soil fungal beta-diversity remains largely unchanged, indicating the importance of stochastic community assembly.

Microbial substrate stoichiometry governs nutrient effects on nitrogen cycling in grassland soils

P. M. Schleuss et al.

Summary: The addition of nitrogen and phosphorus changes the C:N ratio of dissolved organic matter, but not of soil microbial biomass. Nitrogen addition decreases non-symbiotic N-2 fixation and increases microbial N release, while phosphorus addition has minimal effects. Changes in substrate stoichiometry drive alterations in microbial N acquisition and release in grassland ecosystems.

Linkages of litter and soil C:N:P stoichiometry with soil microbial resource limitation and community structure in a subtropical broadleaf forest invaded by Moso bamboo

Yingzhi Zhao et al.

Summary: The invasion of bamboo significantly alters soil microbial community structure and enzyme activities, leading to imbalances in carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus ratios between decomposers and their resources. This study highlights the importance of understanding the stoichiometric relationship in regulating soil microbial dynamics following plant invasion.
