The state of soil organic carbon in agricultural lands of Iran with different agroecological conditions

Hamed Rezaei et al.

Summary: Soil organic carbon (SOC) is crucial for soil quality, fertility, crop productivity and drought resistance. Iran lacks a comprehensive dataset of SOC in agricultural lands. This study aimed to present the SOC map of Iran, comparing SOC content in different land uses and agro-ecological zones. Results showed that only 4% of agricultural lands in Iran have >2% SOC, with majority having <1% SOC. Topsoil SOC content decreases from horticultural to irrigated agriculture, dry farming, and fallow lands, indicating higher SOC accumulation in horticultural and irrigated lands. Management strategies are needed for better SOC sequestration in different AEZs for sustainable agriculture.

The effect of salinity on soil chemical characteristics, enzyme activity and bacterial community composition in rice rhizospheres in Northeastern Thailand

Natthawat Sritongon et al.

Summary: Saline soil limits rice productivity in Northeastern Thailand. This study investigated soil physicochemical analysis, soil enzyme activities, and bacterial communities in the rhizosphere of 'RD 6' rice grown in salt-affected rice fields. The results showed that soil chemical characteristics and soil enzymes activities explained a high percentage of the total variation. Soil properties and enzyme activities were adversely affected by salinity, while bacterial communities showed some resistance. These findings provide promising data for assessing the quality of rice field soil in the future.

Sorbitol and biochar have key roles in microbial and enzymatic activity of saline-sodic and calcareous soil in millet cropping.

Musa al-Reza Taheri et al.

Summary: The research found that using sorbitol and biochar in saline and sodic soil can increase the microbial and enzymatic activities of the soil, enhance the plant's resistance to saline and sodic conditions, and improve the soil's chemical properties.

Microbial Diversity and Adaptation under Salt-Affected Soils: A Review

Chiranjeev Kumawat et al.

Summary: Salinization of soil reduces plant growth and development, posing a threat to food security as farmland cultivation decreases. Salt-affected soils are widespread globally, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. The total area of salt-affected soil worldwide is 1 billion ha, with India alone having 6.74 million ha(-1) of salt-stressed land, including saline and alkali soils. Specific approaches are needed for sustainable crop production on salt-stressed soils, with bioremediation being an eco-friendly option. Microorganisms, such as halophilic bacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, have been found effective for promoting plant growth under salt-stress conditions. These microbial-mediated approaches can help mitigate salt-affected soil and increase crop productivity.

Acid-Modified Biochar Impacts on Soil Properties and Biochemical Characteristics of Crops Grown in Saline-Sodic Soils

Mahmoud El-Sharkawy et al.

Summary: Soil salinity and sodicity are major reasons for reduced soil productivity. This study investigated the effects of different biochar materials and acid-modified biochar on alleviating abiotic stresses in saline-sodic soil. The results showed that acid-modified biochar improved soil properties, increased plant yield, and enhanced antioxidant enzyme activity.

Effect of Fine Size-Fractionated Sunflower Husk Biochar on Water Retention Properties of Arable Sandy Soil

Lukasz Gluba et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that adding sieved and fine particle size sunflower husk biochar to sandy soil significantly increases the available water content. The most notable improvement was observed at the lowest doses and for the finest size fractions of biochar. The water retention effects on sandy soil were explained as an interplay between biochar dose, particle size, and porous properties.

Global predictions of primary soil salinization under changing climate in the 21st century

Amirhossein Hassani et al.

Summary: Excess salt accumulation in the root zone causes soil salinization, which affects soil health, biodiversity, and food security. The authors used machine learning algorithms to predict global soil salinization under changing climate in the 21st century, identifying hotspots in drylands such as South America, southern and western Australia, Mexico, southwest United States, and South Africa. Conversely, they project a decrease in soil salinity in northwest United States, the Horn of Africa, Eastern Europe, Turkmenistan, and west Kazakhstan in response to climate change.

Effects of different innovative bone char based P fertilizers on bacteria catalyzing P turnover in agricultural soils

Martin Grafe et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is critical for plant growth, but natural sources are limited, necessitating improved phosphorus recycling. The addition of bone char plus enhances solubilization potential, while low phosphorus concentrations in control plots and slow release from bone char favor phosphorus recycling from biomass.

Biochar surface functional groups as affected by biomass feedstock, biochar composition and pyrolysis temperature

Rainer Janu et al.

Summary: This study tested 92 types of biochar to determine the relationship between its characteristics and infrared sorption. The results showed that parameters such as pyrolysis temperature, H/C ratio, specific surface area, and ash fraction were key factors affecting the functional group signals. Regression and PCA analysis were able to explain a significant portion of data variance.
