Dissecting Breeders' Sense via Explainable Machine Learning Approach: Application to Fruit Peelability and Hardness in Citrus

Mai F. Minamikawa et al.

Summary: Genomics-assisted breeding has gained attention in fruit breeding by utilizing genomics-based methods. Efficient collection of high-quality phenotypic data is crucial for the success of such breeding. This study developed a method to automatically measure the morphological features of citrus fruits through image analysis and found significant correlations between the fruit morphology and quality traits. This approach can improve the accuracy of genome-wide association study and genomic selection for citrus fruit quality traits.

Deep Learning Predicts Rapid Over-softening and Shelf Life in Persimmon Fruits

Maria Suzuki et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of deep learning with simple RGB images to predict a severe fruit disorder in persimmons. Three convolutional neural networks (CNNs) were utilized to successfully classify the over-softened fruits and controls, with over 80% accuracy. The predictions in the binary classification were correlated to the date of fruit softening. By applying explainable deep learning methods, relevant regions on the fruit surface, particularly in the peripheral areas, were identified as early symptoms. This research suggests that deep learning frameworks can provide new insights into early physiological symptoms.

Reinvention of hermaphroditism via activation of a RADIALIS-like gene in hexaploid persimmon

Kanae Masuda et al.

Summary: In flowering plants, persimmons have evolved dioecy via lineage-specific palaeoploidizations, and more recently established monoecy. The molecular pathways underlying these polyploid-specific transitions to hermaphroditism involve antagonistic pathways regulated by different hormone signals. The activation of the DkRAD gene plays a crucial role in the production of hermaphrodite flowers, representing a new path to hermaphroditism.

Noninvasive Diagnosis of Seedless Fruit Using Deep Learning in Persimmon

Kanae Masuda et al.

Summary: The noninvasive diagnosis of internal traits in fruit crops is a challenging issue that may be addressed through the use of deep learning techniques. By applying convolutional neural networks to classify seedlessness in persimmon fruit, we were able to achieve up to 85% accuracy in binary classification of seeded and seedless fruits. The results demonstrate the potential of deep learning for noninvasive diagnosis of fruit internal traits using simple RGB images and provide new insights into features of seeded/seedless fruits.
