Fucoxanthin biosynthesis has a positive correlation with the specific growth rate in the culture of microalga Phaeodactylum tricornutum

Do Yeon Kwon et al.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between the specific growth rate of Phaeodactylum tricornutum and fucoxanthin biosynthesis in both batch and semi-continuous cultures. It was found that fucoxanthin content showed a positive correlation with specific growth rate during the exponential growth phase. Transcriptome analysis revealed different metabolic and key regulatory genes were active at different growth phases. Genes such as ISPD and VDE were identified as critical for the regulation of fucoxanthin biosynthesis in P. tricornutum.

Plastidial acyl carrier protein Δ9-desaturase modulates eicosapentaenoic acid biosynthesis and triacylglycerol accumulation in Phaeodactylum tricornutum

Richard Smith et al.

Summary: The marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum is a model organism for studying long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids biosynthesis. The study identified the key enzyme plastidial acyl carrier protein Delta 9-desaturase and revealed its important role in EPA synthesis and triacylglycerol production. This research provides insight into lipid metabolism in diatoms and suggests novel approaches for manipulating oil composition in microalgae.

Bacterial diketopiperazines stimulate diatom growth and lipid accumulation

John Sittmann et al.

Summary: Diatoms, as priority candidates for biofuel production due to their photosynthetic efficiency and high-lipid content, can significantly increase their cell count when co-cultured with sporulating Bacillus thuringiensis. Two diketopiperazines (DKPs) identified from the mother cell lysate of B. thuringiensis stimulate both growth and lipid content of Phaeodactylum tricornutum, providing potential clues for bacterial-produced growth factors for marine microalgae.
