The opportunistic nature of gut commensal microbiota

Priyankar Dey et al.

Summary: The abundance of gut commensals has been associated with health-promoting effects, but the definition of good or bad microbiota depends on specific conditions. The interaction between host-microbiota and microbe-microbe determines the beneficial or pathogenic nature of microbiota. Emerging evidence suggests that gut bacteria, which are commonly considered beneficial, can promote opportunistic infections. This review summarizes the concepts behind the occasional transformation from commensal to pathogenic state of gut bacteria. It discusses relevant clinical and experimental studies on commensal overgrowth and bacteraemia. Three key processes and their underlying mechanisms responsible for the opportunistic nature of commensals are summarized, including improved colonisation fitness, pathoadaptive mutations, and evasion of host immune response. Overall, this review provides an updated concept summary on the underlying mechanisms of disease causative events driven by gut commensal bacteria.

The gut microbiota-astrocyte axis: Implications for type 2 diabetic cognitive dysfunction

Zi-Han Li et al.

Summary: Diabetic cognitive dysfunction (DCD) is a complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus that significantly affects self-monitoring of blood glucose and quality of life in the elderly. Previous studies focused on neuronal dysfunction, while recent research has recognized the potential therapeutic role of astrocytes and the influence of gut microbiota on cognitive function. This review aims to deepen our understanding of the pathological progress of DCD and explore potential therapeutic targets through the gut microbiota-astrocyte axis.

Summary: Microplastics are predicted to act as carriers for organic pollutants, but their carrier role and bio-toxic effects with other pollutants in environments are poorly acknowledged. This study investigated the effects of polyethylene (PE) and 9-Nitroanthracene (9-NAnt) on zebrafish, showing that PE could carry 9-NAnt into fish causing bioaccumulation, but in the case of coexisting exposures, PE reduced 9-NAnt bioaccumulation. Summary: This study demonstrates that PTS can protect against MGO-induced endothelial cell cytotoxicity by regulating glyoxalase, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. PTS enhances GLO-1 levels and GSH content to activate the glyoxalase system, eliminates toxic MGO and AGEs, suppresses oxidative stress through Nrf2 activation, and alleviates apoptosis in HUVECs by inhibiting mitochondrial-dependent signaling cascades. These findings suggest that PTS may be beneficial in the treatment of diabetic vascular complications.
