Brief sensory deprivation triggers plasticity of dopamine-synthesising enzyme expression in genetically labelled olfactory bulb dopaminergic neurons

Darren J. Byrne et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the rapid experience-dependent changes in dopamine-synthesising enzyme expression in the olfactory bulb. The results showed that the expression of dopamine-synthesising enzyme was influenced by olfactory experience, while the expression of GABA-synthesising enzyme remained unchanged.

Infiltration of peripheral immune cells into the olfactory bulb in a mouse model of acute nasal inflammation

Hinami Asano et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of chronic nasal inflammation on olfactory bulb (OB) in mice, focusing on the initial events occurring in the olfactory nerve fibers and meninges. The results showed increased chemokine expression and peripheral immune cell infiltration into the OB within 12 hours of lipopolysaccharide administration, leading to pro-inflammatory status in the OB. Meningeal immunity was also activated, with resident microglia producing anti-inflammatory cytokines within 24 hours. These initial events may contribute to OB atrophy.

Dopamine Increases the Intrinsic Excitability of Parvalbumin-Expressing Fast-Spiking Cells in the Piriform Cortex

Yasmin Potts et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the role of dopamine in the piriform cortex and reveals its significant impact on the intrinsic excitability of a specific group of GABAergic neurons. The findings contribute to our understanding of how dopamine modulates odor processing and provides insights into the deleterious effects of dopamine-related neurodegenerative disorders on the sense of smell.

Olfactory impairment in psychiatric disorders: Does nasal inflammation impact disease psychophysiology?

Yuto Hasegawa et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of the impact of nasal inflammation on the olfactory system, as well as clinical studies and preclinical evidence on olfactory impairments in psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and depression. It also discusses the potential impact of nasal inflammation on brain development and function, and the role of nasal inflammation in the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders. Considering the current outbreak of COVID-19 and its effects on olfactory function, this line of research is crucial for understanding the importance of nasal inflammation in psychiatric disorders.

Tissue eosinophils and mucous inflammatory cytokines for the evaluation of olfactory recovery after endoscopic sinus surgery in patients with nasal polyposis

Zhidi Zhang et al.

Summary: Understanding the etiologies of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP)-associated olfactory dysfunction is crucial for future clinical care and research. This study found that tissue eosinophils and mucous inflammatory cytokines, including IL-5, IL-13, eotaxin-3, and periostin, may contribute to CRSwNP-associated olfactory dysfunction. Higher levels of IL-5 are associated with a lower chance of olfactory function recovery after surgery.

Allergic sensitization pattern as a marker of bronchial hyperresponsiveness in allergic rhinitis patients living in temperate continental climate zone

Slavomir Perecinsky et al.

Summary: This study analyzed allergen sensitization patterns and factors affecting bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) in allergic rhinitis patients living in a temperate continental climate zone. The results showed that dogs and Alternaria were the allergens most closely associated with BHR, while sensitization to house dust mites did not show a relationship with BHR. Allergic rhinitis patients with BHR had higher levels of total IgE and eosinophils. Sensitization to more than six allergens significantly increased the probability of BHR.

Allergic rhinitis impairs working memory in association with drop of hippocampal - Prefrontal coupling

Morteza Salimi et al.

Summary: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is associated with deficits in learning and memory. This study examined alterations in the vHipp-p1PFC circuit in a rat model of AR and found that AR impacts working memory performance, reduces oscillations in the prefrontal cortex, and disrupts coherence between the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. The impairment of functional coupling between these brain regions in AR may contribute to working memory deficits.

Activation of cholinergic system partially rescues olfactory dysfunction-induced learning and memory deficit in mice

Kohei Takahashi et al.

Summary: This study found that intranasal zinc sulfate-treated mice exhibited olfactory dysfunction and impaired short-term and long-term learning and memory. Olfaction dysfunction was significantly correlated with short-term memory, and treatment with zinc sulfate altered the choline acetyltransferase levels in the olfactory bulb.

Exploratory drive, fear, and anxiety are dissociable and independent components in foraging mice

Daniel E. Heinz et al.

Summary: Food restriction increases exploratory behavior in mice while reducing anxiety-related behavior. By using behavioral assays, researchers were able to identify three independent components (approach behavior, avoidance behavior, and decision making), resembling the behavioral dimensions proposed by Gray's Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory. This study demonstrates the anxiolytic effects of food restriction in a mouse model of anxiety disorders, which can be dissociated from a general increase in foraging behavior.
