Summary: This study reveals that gastrointestinal sensory neurons detect visceral hypoosmolality and transmit hormonal signals to regulate thirst circuit activity through the hepatic portal area (HPA) pathway.

Bidirectional effects of estradiol on the control of water intake in female rats

Jessica Santollo et al.

Summary: Research has found a new previously unidentified dipsogenic effect of estradiol, in addition to its well-known inhibitory effect on water intake. The anti-dipsogenic effect of estradiol on unstimulated water intake in female rats is independent of its anorexigenic effect. Ovariectomy significantly increases food intake and body weight, but only transiently increases water intake.

Central and peripheral GLP-1 systems independently suppress eating

Daniel I. Brierley et al.

Summary: GLP-1 suppresses eating through independent gut-brain circuits, with PPG(NTS) neurons not being necessary for the eating suppression effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists. Concurrent activation of PPG(NTS) neurons can more effectively suppress eating than using semaglutide alone.
