Plant-associated Bacillus and Pseudomonas antimicrobial activities in plant disease suppression via biological control mechanisms-A review

Ivica Dimkic et al.

Summary: Biocontrol strains from the genera Bacillus and Pseudomonas play beneficial roles in plant health by directly inhibiting pathogens, promoting plant growth, inducing systemic resistance, and producing bioactive compounds like lipopeptides and volatile substances. These bacteria are effective against a wide range of phytopathogens and pests, enhancing plant defense mechanisms and inhibiting pathogen growth through various mechanisms like antibiosis, ISR, and competition for resources.

Bacillus velezensis WZ-37, a New Broad-Spectrum Biocontrol Strain, Promotes the Growth of Tomato Seedlings

Xiuling Chen et al.

Summary: A biological control agent is a promising alternative for the prevention and control of gray mold disease, as it produces low pollution, generates minimal residues that pose no risk to the environment, and is not easily susceptible to resistance by pathogens. The antifungal strain Bacillus velezensis WZ-37 isolated from the plant rhizosphere exhibits high antifungal activity against various phytopathogens, making it a potential candidate for broad-spectrum biocontrol applications in agriculture.

Summary: During the growing seasons from 2015 to 2017, 71 isolates of R. solani were obtained from sugar beet fields in Konya province, Turkey. Majority of the isolates were identified as highly virulent, causing varying degrees of disease severity in sugar beet. This study also reported the first occurrence of certain anastomosis groups in Turkey and the Konya region.

Swapan Kumar Paul et al.

Summary: It was found that 9.74% of sugar beet plants in 144 experimental plots at Bangladesh Agricultural University were infected with Sclerotium rolfsii causing root rot. The fungus was isolated and pure culture obtained for further analysis, confirming its identity through morphological and molecular investigations. Factors such as carbon sources and medium pH were optimized for better growth of the pathogen on synthetic media, aiding in large-scale inoculation studies.

Summary: Antagonist bacteria isolated from citrus rhizosphere were screened for their potential in biological control of dry root rot (DRR) caused by Neocosmospora solani. Through molecular identification, it was found that these bacteria belong to Bacillus, Stenotrophomonas, and Sphingobacterium genus. They exhibited various mechanisms such as producing antimicrobial substances and growth promotion traits, showing promise as biocontrol agents.
