How Much Phosphorus Uptake Is Required for Achieving Maximum Maize Grain Yield? Part 2: Impact of Phosphorus Uptake on Grain Quality and Partitioning of Nutrients

Chad J. Penn et al.

Summary: This study found that excess phosphorus uptake by maize can result in decreased grain yield, and investigated how excessive phosphorus uptake indirectly affects the uptake and translocation of other nutrients within the plant. Data suggest that luxury phosphorus consumption inhibits the translocation of copper, zinc, and iron from roots to grain, leading to a decrease in grain yield.

Breeding and genomics approaches for improving phosphorus-use efficiency in grain legumes

Uday Chand Jha et al.

Summary: Phosphorus (P) is a crucial nutrient for plant growth, but its sources are non-renewable, raising concerns for sustainable agriculture and food security. Improving plant P-use efficiency (PUE) is necessary for intensive cropping systems, and this review explores various breeding approaches and tools to enhance PUE in grain legumes. The genetic architecture of PUE traits is complex, influenced by both genetics and the environment. Advances in genomics and functional genomics have provided insights into the underlying genetic mechanisms and pathways related to PUE, while novel breeding schemes and tools offer opportunities for designing P-use-efficient cultivars in low-P environments.

Identification and expression analysis of phosphate transporter (PHT) gene family in Lupinus albus cluster root under phosphorus stress

Mehtab Muhammad Aslam et al.

Summary: This study identified and characterized the phosphate transporter (PHT) gene family in white lupin, a crop with the potential to survive in phosphorus-limited soil. The researchers conducted an exhaustive search in the white lupin genome and identified five subfamilies of phosphate transporters. They found that these genes were unevenly distributed on 16 chromosomes and were involved in regulating phosphate uptake, transport, and recycling mechanisms. The study provides important insights into the genetic evolution and expression of phosphate transporters in white lupin, which could help solve phosphorus deficiency issues and mitigate stress responses.

Chao Jiang et al.

Summary: This study identified 48 PpeGRAS genes in the peach genome and analyzed their potential roles in peach growth. The results showed that a dispersed gene duplication event was responsible for the duplication of the GRAS gene family in peach. Phylogenetic analysis categorized the PpeGRAS family into 13 subfamilies, and genes in the same subgroup shared similar motifs.

A phosphate starvation response-centered network regulates mycorrhizal symbiosis

Jincai Shi et al.

Summary: Most land plants acquire phosphorus from soil through direct phosphate uptake pathway via root hairs and epidermis, or through an indirect pathway via mycorrhizal symbiosis. The gene regulatory network between transcription factors and mycorrhizal symbiosis-related genes is controlled by the conserved P-sensing pathway centered on phosphate starvation response (PHR) transcription factors. SPX-domain proteins and OsPHR2 play crucial roles in regulating symbiosis-related genes during mycorrhizal infection.

Phosphorus uptake is associated with the rhizosheath formation of mature cluster roots in white lupin under soil drying and phosphorus deficiency

Mehtab Muhammad Aslam et al.

Summary: This study evaluated rhizosheath formation and phosphorus concentration in white lupin under different soil treatments, finding that MCR contributes to enhanced phosphorus accumulation and uptake under P starvation. Additionally, a positive correlation was observed between rhizosheath weight and phosphorus uptake, with gene expression analysis suggesting that sucrose status may facilitate P uptake. Overall, these findings indicate that novel root structures, such as MCR, play a crucial role in enhancing phosphorus uptake in plants under phosphorus-deficient conditions.

Summary: The study found that drought-induced enhancement of rhizosheath formation is dependent on ABA.
