Dark fermentation and microalgae cultivation coupled systems: Outlook and challenges

Julien Lacroux et al.

Summary: The implementation of a sustainable bio-based economy is a top priority. Efforts have been made to use organic waste for biohydrogen production via dark fermentation. The valorization of dark fermentation effluents as carbon sources for microalgae cultivation is an innovative approach that maximizes carbon recovery. This integrated process plays a key role in the transition towards a circular economy.

Germination screen for microalgae-generated plant growth biostimulants

Zeenat Rupawalla et al.

Summary: Greenhouse horticulture is projected to reach a market size of approximately USD 30 billion by 2023. The use of controlled climate systems can significantly increase crop yields compared to traditional field production due to improved water and nutrient efficiency. Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are important for enhancing germination, plant development, and overall production efficiency, particularly for high-value crops in controlled environments. This study developed a novel in-vivo germination and plant growth assay using spinach as a test crop to identify microalgae strains that naturally produce PGRs. Four fast growing microalgae strains from Chlorococcum, Micractinium, Scenedesmus, and Chlorella genera were screened for their potential as reliable and cost-effective sources of PGRs. The results showed that algae extracts significantly improved seed germination, cotyledon emergence, and seedling biomass compared to water and seaweed extract controls. The quantification of various PGRs confirmed the production of relevant hormones by the four uncharacterized microalgal strains. This research suggests that PGR-producing microalgae can be a natural and cost-effective alternative to synthetic agrochemicals for boosting plant propagation.

Evaluation of the impact of varied biochars produced from M. x giganteus waste and application rate on the soil properties and physiological parameters of Spinacia oleracea L.

Oleksandr Kononchuk et al.

Summary: This research investigated the effects of waste-derived Miscanthus biochars on soil properties and Spinacia oleracea L. growth. The results showed that the incorporation of biochar increased soil organic carbon, pH, K, and P2O5 content. However, increasing biochar dose did not necessarily improve yield or photosynthetic parameters. It is recommended to evaluate the effects of biochar on target crop development through preliminary trials before field-scale application.
