Kinetic modeling of laser absorption in foams

S. Shekhanov et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interaction between lasers and foam targets, which is important for inertial confinement fusion studies and the creation of secondary sources of energetic particles and radiation. By applying the Mie theory, the analysis shows enhanced laser absorption due to plasma resonance when lasers interact with thin wires, and this conclusion is confirmed by detailed kinetic simulations. Numerical simulations also determine the characteristic time for the transformation of solid elements into plasma and the energy partition between electrons and ions.

Studies of laser-plasma interaction physics with low-density targets for direct-drive inertial confinement fusion on the Shenguang III prototype

Summary: The physics of laser-plasma interaction was studied on the Shenguang III prototype laser facility using high-energy laser beams to ionize low-density plastic foam and create a sub-millimeter-sized hot underdense plasma. Experimental results showed significant stimulated Raman scattering, indicating the importance of implementing laser temporal smoothing techniques for controlling laser propagation and absorption. The study also analyzed the results with radiation hydrodynamic simulations taking into account foam ionization and homogenization.
