Revealing phase transitions and instabilities in pseudospark discharges

Jiaqi Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the phase transitions and instabilities in pseudospark discharge by combining multiple discharge waveforms, time-resolved images, electron beam current profiles, 2D kinetic simulation results, and spectral line emission of cathode material. The research identifies two types and four occurrences of instabilities, caused by the penetration of virtual anode plasma and the cyclic nature of cathode spots. The study also discusses important features and suppression methods of these instabilities.

Simulation investigations on stepwise penetration of virtual anode in pseudospark discharge

Guoxiang Sun et al.

Summary: This study establishes a pseudospark discharge model using 2D kinetic plasma simulation code VSim and finds that the phenomenon of dual peaks in the discharge current is related to the formation and disappearance of a potential barrier in the cathode hole region. Increasing the working gas pressure, the secondary electron yield of the cathode material, or the trigger intensity can suppress or eliminate the stepwise penetration of the virtual anode.

The effects of match circuit on the breakdown process of capacitively coupled plasma driven by radio frequency

Hao Wu et al.

Summary: By studying the electrical breakdown process of CCP in the presence of a matching network, the plasma parameters and electric parameters of the matching network during the breakdown phase are given and analyzed. The study shows that the formation of the sheath during breakdown significantly increases the capacitance of the discharge chamber, changing the electric signal amplitude of the external circuit. With the stabilization of plasma, the equivalent capacitance of CCP increases, continuing to change the electrical signal until the steady-state is reached. Furthermore, the gradually oscillating CCP capacitance results in the appearance of high-order harmonics of the discharge current.

Investigation on discharge process and switching characteristics of a pseudospark switch in series with a magnetic switch

Saikang Shen et al.

Summary: In this study, the discharge process and switching characteristics of a pseudospark switch in series with a magnetic switch were investigated. The results showed that the addition of a magnetic switch extended the duration of the pseudospark discharge and reduced the commutation loss. An increase in the number of magnetic cores significantly decreased the commutation loss, while the trigger delay time remained almost constant. Increasing gas pressure led to a decrease in the trigger delay time, magnetic delay time, and commutation loss. Additionally, at a fixed gas pressure, the trigger delay time of the pseudospark switch in series with a magnetic switch decreased initially and then remained constant with increasing applied voltage, while the magnetic delay time decreased and the commutation loss linearly increased.

Performance of a Multigap Multiaperture Pseudospark Switch in Series With the Saturable Inductor

Akhilesh Mishra et al.

Summary: In this study, experimental investigation was conducted to study the discharge characteristics of a multi-gap multiaperture pseudospark switch (PSS) configuration with a saturable inductor (SI) in series. The impact of the number of inductor cores on the commutation process was studied experimentally. It was found that the saturated inductor can accelerate the current rise rate and reduce power dissipation during the commutation process. Additionally, an equivalent electrical circuit model was proposed to estimate the power losses.
