Permeability prediction of low-resolution porous media images using autoencoder-based convolutional neural network

HouLin Zhang et al.

Summary: A semi-supervised machine learning approach is proposed to predict the permeability of porous media from low-resolution images. This approach combines the autoencoder module trained with unlabeled data and the convolutional neural network trained with a small amount of labeled data to improve the prediction performance. The results show that the proposed AE-CNN method outperforms traditional CNN and lattice Boltzmann method in predicting permeability from low-resolution images.

Mitigating water blockage in shale matrix by acidizing or oxidizing treatment: Evidence from transport pathway change and diffusivity enhancement

Qiang Chen et al.

Summary: The study shows that sensitive minerals in shale matrix are evenly distributed and dissolution caused by reactive fluids leads to the generation of new pore space and overall pore volume increase. In addition, oxidation treatment results in the formation of oxidation-related microfractures, increasing macropore diffusivity.

Pore-scale systematic study on the disconnection of bulk gas phase during water imbibition using visualized micromodels

Jian Tian et al.

Summary: In this study, we conducted a systematic micromodel investigation to explore the disconnection of gas phase during water imbibition. Our results revealed that snap-off and bypassing flows are the main mechanisms determining the disconnection and entrapment of the gas phase, and they are qualitatively linked to the core-scale permeability jail phenomenon. This research enriches our understanding of the behaviors of gas phase during water imbibition into tight formations.

Summary: The study focuses on simulating oil-water two-phase flow in shale reservoirs using a pore network model and validates the calculated relative permeabilities. A representative shale pore network was extracted from a Jimsar shale sample using three-dimensional imaging, revealing the absolute permeability and differences in relative permeabilities under different wettability conditions.
