Electroosmotic mixing of non-Newtonian fluid in an optimized geometry connected with a modulated microchamber

M. Majhi et al.

Summary: The main objective of this work is to enhance micromixing in lab-on-a-chip devices used in BioMEMS through the electrokinetic mechanism. A numerical study is conducted to investigate the mixing quantification of an electroosmotic micromixer with a nozzle-diffuser shaped channel. The study examines the design of the mixing chamber, the size of the inner obstacle, the conical angle of the channel, and the electric double layer height's influence on the flow inside the micromixer.

Computational and theoretical model of electro-osmotic flow pumping in a microchannel with squeezing walls

Yasser Aboelkassem

Summary: This study developed numerical simulation and theoretical solution for the electro-osmotic pumping flow in a microchannel with squeezing and charged walls. The mathematical model was derived based on a strong coupling between the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation and the flow lubrication theory. The effects of various parameters on the fluid pressure distribution, velocity field, and net flow rate were investigated, and it was found that the induced pumping rate depends strongly on the combined effects of multiple factors.

Mixing in small scale fluidic systems swayed by rotationality effects

P. Kaushik et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the enhancement strategy of important fluidic functionality, mixing, in an on-chip device embedded in a rotating disk. The analysis considers the effect of rotation and uses classical fluid dynamic equations to comprehensively describe the mixing process. Experiments performed in the case of pure diffusion verify the numerical results effectively. The results show that molecular diffusion and rotation-induced forcing modulate the mixing process in the portable fluidic device, and strong advective transport of species resulting from higher rotational effect can enhance mixing even at short distances.

Boundary condition induced passive chaotic mixing in straight microchannels

Habilou Ouro-Koura et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a simple approach to enhance passive microfluidic flow mixing in a straight microchannel at low Reynolds numbers. By introducing asymmetric wetting boundary conditions and creating specific hydrophobic slip patterns on the channel floor, stretching, folding, and recirculation of the flowing fluid volume can be induced, leading to effective mixing without turbulence. The study also highlights two distinctive pathways for achieving homogeneous mixing: the manipulation of fluid volumes through stretching, folding, and twisting, and the generation of chaotic advection via hydrophobic boundary patterns. By combining stretching, folding, and chaotic advection, the mixing length can be significantly reduced, providing new design opportunities for efficient passive microfluidic reactors.

Magnetofluidic mixing of a ferrofluid droplet under the influence of a time-dependent external field

Sudip Shyam et al.

Summary: Experimental investigations were conducted on the mixing of a ferrofluid droplet with a non-magnetic miscible fluid in the presence of a time-dependent magnetic field on an open surface microfluidic platform. It was found that the movement of magnetic nanoparticles inside the ferrofluid droplet domain strengthens flow instability and promotes mixing efficiency.
