The effect of inlet flow profile and nozzle diameter on drug delivery to the maxillary sinus

Oveis Pourmehran et al.

Summary: This paper examines the effect of turbulence and swirling in the inlet flow and the diameter of the nozzle on flow characteristics and particles' transport/deposition patterns in the nasal cavity and maxillary sinus. The results show that the nasal valve plays a key role in nasal resistance and the effect of turbulence at the inlet on drug delivery is negligible. Increasing flow swirl and decreasing nozzle diameter significantly improve particle deposition. The use of swirling flow and reduced nozzle diameter can increase drug delivery efficiency.

Computational assessment of the nasal air conditioning and paranasal sinus ventilation from nasal assisted breathing therapy

Mehrdad Khamooshi et al.

Summary: Nasal cannula oxygen therapy is a common treatment for respiratory failure, but its potential for assisted breathing needs further investigation. This study used computational fluid dynamics simulations to investigate nasal heat and mass transfer and sinus ventilation during assisted breathing under different conditions. The results showed that high-flow assisted breathing had the most impact on nasal heat flux and sinonasal ventilation, while low-flow assisted breathing had minimal effect and was considered ineffective for relevant treatment.

How SARS-CoV-2 Omicron droplets transport and deposit in realistic extrathoracic airways

Mohammad S. Islam et al.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant is highly transmissible and causes a higher mortality rate. It establishes a local infection at the extrathoracic airway level. This study developed a numerical model to analyze the transport behavior of Omicron droplets in the extrathoracic airways and found that nose inhalation is more harmful due to higher deposition rates and toxicity.

How Nanoparticle Aerosols Transport through Multi-Stenosis Sections of Upper Airways: A CFD-DPM Modelling

Md Rabiul Islam et al.

Summary: Airway stenosis is a global respiratory health problem caused by various factors. This study provides insights into the airflow dynamics and nanoparticle transport in multi-stenosis airways. The results show that higher velocity and wall shear stress are observed in stenosis sections, and the highest pressure is found in the mouth-throat section. The study also reveals the dependence of particle escape rate on flow rate and particle size, as well as the higher deposition efficiency in mouth-throat and stenosis sections.

A Novel Machine Learning Prediction Model for Aerosol Transport in Upper 17-Generations of the Human Respiratory Tract

Mohammad S. Islam et al.

Summary: This study develops a novel machine learning model to accurately predict particle deposition in the lower airways. The model reduces computational time and uses four ML regression models, with the MLP model displaying the most accurate estimates. The model predicts deposition efficiency for different particle sizes and flow rates, as well as lobe-specific efficiency for various flow rates.

Presence of airborne microplastics in human lung tissue

Luis Fernando Amato-Lourenco et al.

Summary: This study confirmed the presence of microplastics in human lung tissues, with polyethylene and polypropylene being the most frequently detected polymers. The potential adverse effects of these microplastics on the respiratory system following inhalation are still unknown, but further research is needed to understand the heterogeneous characteristics of these contaminants.

Polydisperse Aerosol Transport and Deposition in Upper Airways of Age-Specific Lung

Mohammad S. Islam et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze airflow and aerosol transport in the age-specific lung, utilizing ANSYS Fluent solver and Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) model for numerical simulation. The results showed that airway size-reduction significantly affected airflow and particle transport in the upper airways. Higher deposition was reported at the mouth-throat region for larger diameter particles, and overall deposition efficiency increased with airway size reduction and flow rate.
