Turbulence amplification in the shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction over compression ramp by the flux reconstruction method

Jingchang Shi et al.

Summary: In this study, wall-resolved large eddy simulation was performed on a supersonic turbulent boundary layer over a 24 degrees compression ramp using high order discontinuous methods. The turbulent flow was resolved using the high order flux reconstruction method, and the shock was captured using a high-resolution, but stable weighted essentially non-oscillation limiter. The solver used in this paper was validated by the double Mach reflection case and the Taylor-Green vortex case. The results of shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction at the ramp corner were validated by numerical simulations and experimental data.

Turbulence kinetic energy transfers in direct numerical simulation of shock-wave-turbulence interaction in a compression/expansion ramp

Niccolo Tonicello et al.

Summary: Direct numerical simulation of a supersonic turbulent boundary layer interacting with a compression/expansion ramp at an angle of 24 degrees shows that compression motions promote forward transfer of kinetic energy, while expansion regions are more likely to experience backscatter of kinetic energy in the presence of compressibility effects. Decomposing the subgrid scale tensor into deviatoric and spherical parts reveals the compressible and incompressible contributions in total kinetic energy transfers across scales. Eddy-viscosity approximation may be a suitable model for the deviatoric part causing forward kinetic energy cascade, while more complex models are needed for the spherical part contributing to backscatter.

Wall heat flux in a supersonic shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction

Fulin Tong et al.

Summary: The characteristics of wall heat flux beneath a supersonic turbulent boundary layer interacting with an impinging shock wave at a certain angle are analyzed using direct numerical simulation. It is found that the QP85 scaling changes across the interaction and the probability density function of the wall heat flux fluctuations is similar to that of wall shear stress. The low-frequency shock unsteadiness has little influence on the wall heat flux spectrum, and the fluctuating wall heat flux experiences a sharp decrease in the separation region and recovers in the downstream region.

Effect of interaction strength on recovery downstream of incident shock interactions

Fulin Tong et al.

Summary: This study presents direct numerical simulations of a supersonic turbulent boundary layer interacting with an impinging shock wave on a flat plate at Mach 2.25. The research systematically investigates the effect of the interaction strength on the recovery process in the downstream region, including the evolution of turbulence, statistical properties of wall pressure fluctuations, and generation of skin friction and wall heat flux. The findings highlight the importance of large-scale structures and the changes in the generation mechanism of mean skin friction.

Direct numerical simulation of the effects of Reynolds number in Mach 2.9 flows over an expansion-compression corner

Zhuxuan Xie et al.

Summary: The study found that Reynolds number can significantly affect the characteristics of shock wave/boundary layer interaction in expansion-compression corner flows. Different Reynolds numbers result in significant differences in separation and reattachment pressures, which also have important effects on turbulent changes.

Compressibility effect on interaction of shock wave and turbulent boundary layer

Zhou Jiang et al.

Summary: The compressibility effect of an oblique shock wave impinging on a turbulent boundary layer was analyzed using direct numerical simulation and Helmholtz decomposition. The interaction of the shock wave and boundary layer enhances the turbulent intensity and dilatational components of velocity fluctuations, leading to increased compressibility. The study provides a theoretical basis for improving simulation methods and turbulence modeling for this interaction.

Large eddy simulation of two separated hypersonic shock/turbulent boundary layer interactions

Clara M. Helm et al.

Summary: This paper presents a study on two separated hypersonic shock/turbulent boundary layer interactions using a large eddy simulation method. The mean flow statistics and various modeling assumptions are documented, and the reliability of the LES method is demonstrated by comparing with existing DNS data. The practical advantages of LES over DNS are also emphasized, including a reduction in grid size and an increase in numerical time step.

Quasi-dynamic subgrid-scale kinetic energy equation model for large-eddy simulation of compressible flows

Han Qi et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a quasi-dynamic SGS kinetic energy eddy-viscosity model for LES of compressible flows. By predicting the SGS kinetic energy and using dual constraints, the eddy-viscosity model can be accurately determined. The model is able to predict important flow quantities accurately and provide more abundant turbulent structures without the need for test filtering.

Unsteady mechanisms in shock wave and boundary layer interactions over a forward-facing step

Weibo Hu et al.

Summary: The flow over a forward-facing step at Ma(infinity) = 1.7 and Re-delta 0 = 1.3718 x 10(4) was investigated using large-eddy simulation. The study compared the effects of laminar inflow and turbulent inflow on the dynamics of the shock wave/boundary layer interaction. The results showed that in the turbulent inflow case, the separation shock and Gortler-like vortices were strongly correlated with low-frequency unsteadiness.

Effect of expansion on the wall heat flux in a supersonic turbulent boundary layer

Fulin Tong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of expansion on the characteristics of wall heat flux in a spatially developing supersonic turbulent boundary layer. The results show that expansion increases the characteristic length scales and convection velocity of the wall heat flux fluctuation. Furthermore, the effect of expansion on the flow structures associated with extreme positive and negative wall heat flux fluctuation events is analyzed. The study concludes that expansion influences the flow structures differently in these events.

Direct numerical simulation of supersonic bump flow with shock impingement

Jiang Lai et al.

Summary: In this study, direct numerical simulations are used to investigate the effects of shock impingement on bump flow behavior. The results show that shock impingement has a significant influence on the pattern of the shock system and the size of the separation region, while also enhancing low-frequency unsteadiness. Downstream of the bump, both the Reynolds stress components and the turbulence kinetic energy are amplified. Turbulence kinetic energy production mainly occurs in the outer layer, and is balanced by turbulent transport and dissipation. Enhanced isotropic turbulence is found in the vicinity of the bump due to shock impingement. Interestingly, the shock impingement has little influence on the predominant contribution of turbulence kinetic energy production.

Low-frequency unsteadiness mechanisms in shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions over a backward-facing step

Weibo Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the low-frequency unsteady motions and vortex phenomena behind a backward-facing step in a turbulent flow using large-eddy simulation. The interaction between shock wave and separated shear layer, shedding of shear layer vortices, and Gortler-like vortices influenced by fluctuations in the incoming boundary layer are key findings. Comparison with a laminar case and observations of slightly higher non-dimensional frequency in the low-frequency mode provide valuable insights.

Summary: The study investigates the interaction between a shock wave and supersonic turbulent boundary layer in a compression-decompression corner, finding that classic flow characteristics are reproduced in the higher case, while the lower case shows reduced separation and suppressed instability. Flow patterns near the reattachment line reveal Gortler vortices, and a negative response mechanism is observed between fluctuating wall pressures upstream and downstream of the decompression corner.
