Direct numerical simulation of film boiling on a horizontal periodic surface in three dimensions using front tracking

A. Khorram et al.

Summary: This study investigates film boiling on a horizontal periodic surface in three dimensions through direct numerical simulations. The effects of Grashof and Jacob numbers on interface dynamics, heat transfer, and fluid flow are studied. Increasing the Grashof number reduces the average size of departing bubbles and increases the average Nusselt number. Wall superheat has direct influence on the Jacob number. The unit cell size and initial perturbation have no significant effect on the Nusselt number, while the density ratio affects the time to reach stationary steady state condition.

Numerical simulation of hydrogen bubble growth and mass transfer on horizontal microelectrode surface under electrode-normal magnetic field

Shuiqing Zhan et al.

Summary: In this study, the growth and detachment characteristics of a single hydrogen bubble on a horizontal microelectrode surface under an electrode-normal magnetic field were numerically investigated. The mass transfer contributions of supersaturated dissolved hydrogen to the bubble growth were analyzed using a direct injection model and a gas-liquid diffusion-controlled model. The results showed that the mass transfer source at the wedge-shaped areas adjacent to the bubble foot played a dominant role in the bubble growth.

On the growth regimes of hydrogen bubbles at microelectrodes

Aleksandr Bashkatov et al.

Summary: This study investigates the growth of single hydrogen bubbles at micro-electrodes in an acidic electrolyte. New bubble growth regimes are identified and key features such as bubble radius growth law, dynamics of microbubble carpet, onset time of oscillations, and oscillation frequencies are characterized. The system's response to jumps in cathodic potential is also studied, leading to a hypothesis on the mechanisms underlying the microbubble carpet and oscillations.

Force balance of hydrogen bubbles growing and oscillating on a microelectrode

Syed Sahil Hossain et al.

Summary: This study provides a more accurate analysis of hydrogen evolution in acidic aqueous electrolytes by considering geometric and electrochemical details measured during experiments. It confirms the role of an attractive electrical force caused by the adsorption of hydrogen ions at the bubble interface and improves the understanding of bubble dynamics observed.

The not-so-subtle flaws of the force balance approach to predict the departure of bubbles in boiling heat transfer

Mattia Bucci et al.

Summary: The force balance approach in predicting the departure of rapidly growing bubbles from a boiling surface is found to be inaccurate and unreliable due to the sensitivity of predictions to small errors in external forces and the questionable assumptions and uncertainties present in the analytical expressions used to estimate these forces.

The dynamic effect of Micro-MHD convection on bubble grown at a horizontal microelectrode

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: The efficiency of water electrolysis, a feasible method for producing super-pure hydrogen, is hindered by low efficiency. Applying a magnetic field can enhance hydrogen production efficiency, although the detailed mechanism is not fully understood. Micro-magnetohydrodynamics has been found to impede the detachment of single bubbles on microelectrodes, providing a new potential way to improve water electrolysis efficiency.

Comparison of bubble parameters between boiling and hydrogen evolving systems

Hae-Kyun Park et al.

Summary: The study found that in a hydrogen evolving system, the active nucleation site density is high, bubble departure diameter is small, and bubble growth time is short. As current density increases, the active nucleation site density increases and the bubble departure diameter decreases.

Competing Marangoni effects form a stagnant cap on the interface of a hydrogen bubble attached to a microelectrode

A. M. Meulenbroek et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the formation of a stagnant cap on a bubble attached to a microelectrode, with numerical simulations incorporating both thermo- and solutocapillary effects. By assuming a stagnant cap of surfactants on the top of the bubble, better predictions for experimentally observed Marangoni convection can be made. The research explores the mechanisms behind the stagnant cap formation utilizing two different methods, providing evidence to support the hypothesis.

Recent development in electrocatalysts for hydrogen production through water electrolysis

Shams Anwar et al.

Summary: Hydrogen is a carbon-free alternative energy source for future energy frameworks, offering environmental friendliness and high energy density. Water electrolysis is a sustainable method to produce high purity hydrogen, and developing electrocatalysts for this process is crucial. While precious metals are traditionally used for electrocatalysis, non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts have advantages in cost and eco-friendliness, but further research is needed for their development.

Experimental investigation on bubble growth and detachment characteristics on vertical microelectrode surface under electrode-normal magnetic field in water electrolysis

Shuiqing Zhan et al.

Summary: The effects of current density and electrode-normal magnetic fields on the growth and detachment characteristics of a single bubble on vertical microelectrode surface have been investigated. The results reveal that bubble coalescence behavior occurs at low current densities and can be gradually inhibited with increasing current density; external magnetic fields promote the bubble detachment behavior within a relatively large current density range.

Development of unsteady natural convection in a square cavity under large temperature difference

Summary: This study investigates the impact of nonuniform fluid density distribution caused by large temperature variations on the development of unsteady natural convection through direct numerical simulations. Significant differences are observed between compressible natural convection and Boussinesq-type natural convection, including asymmetric transitions to unsteady flow and different instability mechanisms in regions near hot and cold walls.
