Electrohydrodynamic viscous fingering of leaky dielectric fluids in a channel

Jiachen Zhao et al.

Summary: A hybrid numerical model based on the lattice Boltzmann method and finite difference method is developed to investigate the control of viscous fingering using electrohydrodynamics. The effects of electric field strength and direction, as well as fluid properties, on viscous fingering are studied extensively. It is found that a horizontal electric field can either promote or suppress viscous fingering, depending on the permittivity ratio and conductivity ratio. A phase diagram is established to characterize the interfacial morphologies under different electric field orientations and fluid properties.

Effects of low and high viscous product on Kelvin-Helmholtz instability triggered by A plus B → C type reaction

Surya Narayan Maharana et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the dynamics of the Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) instability triggered by a nonlinear reaction. The study finds that the viscosity gradient at the reactive interface is affected by the chemical reaction, leading to the occurrence of K-H roll-ups. The viscosity of the product and the log-mobility ratio play important roles in determining the flow features and the occurrence of K-H roll-ups. The results demonstrate the significance of considering both the chemical reaction and viscosity gradient in understanding the chemo-hydrodynamic K-H instability.

Pore-scale study of three-phase reactive transport processes in porous media

Xin Sha et al.

Summary: A pore-scale model based on the lattice Boltzmann method is developed to simulate coupled three-phase flow and reactive transport processes in this study, which is validated by various tests. The results show that in a two-channel structure, the phase with higher viscosity is more difficult to be displaced as the viscosity ratio increases, and the surface tension force between two certain phases can suppress reactive transport between them.

Radial viscous fingering induced by an infinitely fast chemical reaction

Priya Verma et al.

Summary: This study provides numerical insights into the radial displacement of two viscously stable reactants undergoing an infinitely fast chemical reaction, expanding the numerical knowledge of the interaction between chemical reaction and hydrodynamic instability. By calculating the onset time of instability and dividing the time domain into stable and unstable zones, the characteristics of reactants in terms of flow stability can be characterized. The dependence of the onset time of instability on the mobility ratio and the Peclet number is obtained, and the length of the fingers in the unstable zone is found to be dependent on the sign of the mobility ratio.

Control and suppression of viscous fingering displacing non-Newtonian fluid with time-dependent injection strategies

Pooja Singh et al.

Summary: This study explores the stabilization mechanism of the fluid-fluid interface in the radial Hele-Shaw cell using a non-Newtonian fluid. It is found that the interface can be stabilized by a non-linear injection rate related to the rheology of the displaced fluid. A quantitative criterion, represented by the dimensionless parameter J, is proposed to control pattern formation and suppress fingering in shear thinning fluids.

Pore-scale simulation of miscible viscous fingering with dissolution reaction in porous media

Timan Lei et al.

Summary: The study reveals that dissolution reaction can delay the onset of fingering and affect fingering propagation and intensity, demonstrating the complex interplay between dissolution, diffusion, and viscosity contrast during miscible displacement in porous media. Increasing Peclet number and viscosity ratio destabilize fingering, while increasing Damkohler number can first suppress and then intensify fingering. The findings provide insights into displacement stability during geological CO2 sequestration, aiding in evaluating storage efficiency and safety.

Reaction induced interfacial instability of miscible fluids in a channel

Surya Narayan Maharana et al.

Summary: This paper investigates whether a chemical reaction between reactants A and B can induce instability of K-H type, and finds that the formation of product C leads to the formation of K-H billows at the A-C interface. By varying parameters, the changes in dynamical properties of the billows are analyzed, showing different results for different values of R-c.

Effect of gas generation by chemical reaction on viscous fingering in a Hele-Shaw cell

Weicen Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of gas-bubble generation by chemical reaction on viscous fingering using a Hele-Shaw cell in a miscible two-phase liquid. It discusses the effect of four characteristic times on displacement pattern with gas bubbles, highlighting the shorter characteristic time of the chemical reaction and the quick bubble coalescence. The research shows that the competition between displacement and nucleation times determines the flow pattern in the system.
