Enhancement of Boiling with Scalable Sandblasted Surfaces

Youngsup Song et al.

Summary: This study investigates sandblasting as a scalable surface engineering technique for enhancing pool boiling heat transfer. The results show that surface roughness and volumetric wicking rate increase with the abrasive size, resulting in significant improvements in the critical heat flux and heat transfer coefficient.

Unified descriptor for enhanced critical heat flux during pool boiling of hemi-wicking surfaces

Youngsup Song et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of structured surfaces in enhancing critical heat flux (CHF) during pool boiling. The results show that CHF enhancement on structured surfaces cannot be solely explained by roughness or wickability. A unified descriptor, representing the combined effects of thin film density and volumetric wicking rate, is derived and shows a reasonable correlation with CHF values.

Electric field enhancement of pool boiling of dielectric fluids on pillar-structured surfaces: A lattice Boltzmann study

Wanxin Li et al.

Summary: Using a phase-change lattice Boltzmann (LB) model coupled with an electric field model, this paper investigates the performance and enhancement mechanism of pool boiling of dielectric fluids on pillar-structured surfaces under an electric field. The numerical investigation reveals that the application of an electric field has both positive and negative effects on pool boiling. It prevents bubble coalescence in channels and blocks liquid supply, leading to the deterioration of pool boiling in the medium-superheat regime. However, it also delays the occurrence of boiling crisis by suppressing the formation of a continuous vapor film and promotes the departure of bubbles on the pillar tops, improving the critical heat flux (CHF).

The not-so-subtle flaws of the force balance approach to predict the departure of bubbles in boiling heat transfer

Mattia Bucci et al.

Summary: The force balance approach in predicting the departure of rapidly growing bubbles from a boiling surface is found to be inaccurate and unreliable due to the sensitivity of predictions to small errors in external forces and the questionable assumptions and uncertainties present in the analytical expressions used to estimate these forces.

Microtube Surfaces for the Simultaneous Enhancement of Efficiency and Critical Heat Flux during Pool Boiling

Youngsup Song et al.

Summary: Boiling is a fundamental process in many applications where surfaces with microcavities or biphilic wettability can enhance heat transfer efficiency. This study investigated microtube structures to simultaneously enhance heat transfer coefficient and critical heat flux, achieving significant improvements compared to smooth surfaces. The combination of micropillars and microtubes further increased critical heat flux by separating nucleating bubbles and rewetting liquids.

Observation of heat transfer mechanisms in saturated pool boiling of water by high-speed infrared thermometry

Takanori Tanaka et al.

Summary: The study revealed the significant contribution of microlayer evaporation to bubble growth in saturated pool boiling, with transient heat conduction and convective heat transfer also playing important roles. Microlayer accounted for approximately 50% of bubble growth, while convective heat transfer was found to be the dominant wall heat transfer mode.

Bubble dynamics and dry spot formation during boiling on a hierarchical structured surface: A lattice Boltzmann study

Y. Yu et al.

Summary: The boiling heat transfer on the hierarchical structured surface is significantly influenced by the structural parameters of secondary pillars. Increasing the height or width of the secondary pillars can enhance the bubble departure frequency, but may also enlarge the dry spot area.

Liquid film-induced critical heat flux enhancement on structured surfaces

Jiaqi Li et al.

Summary: This study used high-magnification in-liquid endoscopy to investigate bubble behavior during boiling on structured surfaces, revealing the previously unknown coexistence of two distinct three-phase contact lines, resulting in the retention of a thin liquid film between the two contact lines. This finding sheds light on a previously unidentified mechanism governing bubble evolution on structured surfaces and has significant implications for various real systems utilizing bubble formation.
