Removal of Non-Specifically Bound Proteins Using Rayleigh Waves Generated on ST-Quartz Substrates

Mandek Richardson et al.

Summary: This study utilized Rayleigh waves in ST-Quartz devices to efficiently remove non-specific protein binding, improving the performance of label-free biosensors; acoustic streaming prevented reattachment of particles by overcoming adhesive forces at various frequencies; results indicate that ST-Quartz enables integration of functions for removal of non-specific binding, mixing, and sensing on a single chip.

Extra stress-mediated acoustic streaming in a surface acoustic wave driven microchannel filled with second-order fluids

Pradipta Kr. Das et al.

Summary: This study investigates the acoustic streaming phenomena in a standing surface acoustic wave driven microfluidic channel filled with second-order fluids. It has been found that increasing Deborah number leads to an initial increase and then gradual suppression of acoustic streaming. The study also reveals that acoustic streaming has negligible dependence on fluid rheology.

A rapid and controllable acoustothermal microheater using thin film surface acoustic waves

Yong Wang et al.

Summary: A rapid and controllable acoustothermal microheater using AlN/Si thin film SAWs was proposed in this paper, showing superior performance compared to other types of thin film SAW devices. The dynamic heating processes of the device for both sessile droplets and liquid within a microchamber were studied, demonstrating stable and repeatable temperature control. Standing SAW heating exhibited improved temperature uniformity compared to travelling SAWs, suggesting great potential for microfluidic heating applications.

Cooling by Baroclinic Acoustic Streaming

Guillaume Michel et al.

Summary: In the absence of natural convection, efficient heat transfers rely on externally forced flows. Generating such flows with acoustic waves rather than mechanical fans can achieve effective cooling in remote locations, especially in heterogeneous background media. Horizontal acoustic waves can significantly enhance heat transfers, with the additional heat flux scaling as the square of the input acoustic power.

Fast Microscale Acoustic Streaming Driven by a Temperature-Gradient-Induced Nondissipative Acoustic Body Force

Wei Qiu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that using a non-dissipative acoustic body force created by light-induced temperature gradients significantly increases the velocity of acoustic streaming in liquids, outperforming traditional Rayleigh streaming and Rayleigh-Benard convection. This thermoacoustic streaming has the potential to enhance heat transfer efficiency at the microscale.

Fluorescence Detection of miRNA-21 Using Au/Pt Bimetallic Tubular Micromotors Driven by Chemical and Surface Acoustic Wave Forces

Gamze Celik Cogal et al.

Summary: This study focuses on utilizing surface acoustic wave (SAW) systems to enhance the detection limit of the cancer-related biomarker miRNA-21 by immobilizing probe dye-labeled single-stranded DNA on Au/Pt micromotors that recognize the target miRNA-21. The speed and fluorescence intensity changes of the micromotors in response to miRNA-21 concentration variation were studied under both with and without SAW conditions, showing a linear relationship. The resulting fluorescence sensor demonstrated a lower limit of detection of 0.19 nM, which was more than 2 folds lower compared to conditions without SAW, indicating the effectiveness of acoustic removal systems in improving the sensor performance.

Unraveling the Autonomous Motion of Polymer-Based Catalytic Micromotors Under Chemical-Acoustic Hybrid Power

Gamze Celik Cogal et al.

Summary: A hybrid micromotor containing a conjugated polymer and a catalytic structure was developed, with its movement characterized under both chemical power and acoustic power. A theoretical model was used to predict and control the micromotor movement, achieving excellent agreement with experimental results and providing on/off control through design of geometries and acoustic field strengths.
