The vortex structures of the mean turbulent flow field in a 90-degree bend pipe

Adarsh Vasa et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the vortex structures of a mean turbulent flow field in a 90-degree bend pipe. The research reveals the characteristics of turbulence and vortex structures, with the convex contour on the inner side of the bend identified as the key vortex-generating surface. The turbulence induced by vortices dissipates within the bend region, but the vortices transported downstream help generate turbulence to compensate for the loss.

On Stokes wave solutions

Kuifeng Zhao et al.

Summary: Using MATLAB(R) Symbolic Toolbox and perturbation method, a new set of Stokes wave solutions, including free surface profile, velocity potential and wave celerity, are derived. Comparisons with existing solutions up to the fifth order reveal differences starting at the third order, and the causes for these differences are identified. The characteristic differences in high order solutions of Stokes waves are highlighted in the figures.

High-frequency instabilities of Stokes waves

Ryan P. Creedon et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spectral stability of small-amplitude, one-dimensional Stokes waves on the surface of an incompressible, inviscid and irrotational fluid. By using a perturbation method, the first few high-frequency instabilities of the small-amplitude Stokes waves are accurately described and compared through asymptotic and numerical computations.

Study of water wave in the intermediate depth of water using second-order Stokes wave equation: a numerical simulation approach

Deepak Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: The paper presents the simulation of the complete physics of the second-order Stokes wave equation using CFD code and VOF method in a 2D numerical wave tank. The study focuses on the effect of wave steepness on ocean waves at low Ursell numbers. The results show that the simulation is in good agreement with the analytical results, and the nonlinearity effect and velocity increase with wave steepness. This study is important for coastal engineering applications and wave energy extraction.

Estimation of characteristic vortex structures in complex flow

Kaustav Chaudhury et al.

Summary: The systematic approach presented involves analyzing complex eigenvalues of the velocity gradient tensor to extract the characteristic vortex region of a complex flow field. The method is applied to various complex flow scenarios including rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection, turbulent channel flow, and a turbulent flow field in a cylindrical cyclonic separator for assessment.

Deep-water spectral wave steepness offshore mainland Portugal

Diogo Mendes et al.

Summary: This study examines the variability of deep-water spectral wave steepness (s(m)) offshore mainland Portugal in the North Atlantic Ocean based on field measurements recorded between 2009 and 2020 at three different locations. The results show similar s(m) variability at different water depths with values between 0.004 and 0.072, and a decrease in s(m) values during September and October.
