Interphase effects on elastic properties of polymer nanocomposites reinforced by carbon nanocones

Seyed Saeid Taheri et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the interfacial and elastic properties of polymer-based nanocomposites reinforced by carbon nanocones (CNCs), revealing two distinct interphase layers and showing that the size and properties of the inner interphase depend on the geometries of CNCs. Finite element modeling is used to simulate CNC-reinforced polyethylene nanocomposites in larger dimensions, studying the effects of different orientations of nanofillers, various volume fractions, and geometrical parameters of the CNCs.

Properties and applications of boron nitride nanotubes

Emine Ayse Turhan et al.

Summary: Nanomaterials, specifically carbon and boron nitride nanostructures, have gained significant attention due to their controllable properties and improved performance. Carbon nanostructures have been widely researched for a range of applications, while boron nitride nanostructures have emerged as a promising alternative due to their enhanced thermal and chemical stabilities. Among these nanostructures, one-dimensional boron nitride nanostructures exhibit unique properties and are being developed for various applications. This review discusses the properties and applications of one-dimensional boron nitride nanostructures in hydrogen uptake, biomedical field, and nanodevices, as well as the research on their modified forms and composites with other materials to enhance their properties.

Mechanical and thermal properties of carbon nanotubes and boron nitride nanotubes for fuel cells and hydrogen storage applications: A comparative review of molecular dynamics studies

Jacob F. N. Dethan et al.

Summary: The molecular dynamics simulation method is widely used to study the mechanical and thermal properties of nanomaterials. However, there is a lack of comprehensive review comparing the thermal and mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs), and their hybrid structures obtained using this method. This paper reviews the contradicting results on the mechanical and thermal properties of CNTs and BNNTs published in the literature. The study identifies a lack of discussion on the thermal and mechanical properties of BNNTs and the impact of encapsulated hydrogen. The authors hope that future research will address these contradictions and provide important insights for hydrogen storage and fuel cell applications.

Nanoengineered Graphene-Reinforced Coating for Leading Edge Protection of Wind Turbine Blades

Nicolai Frost-Jensen Johansen et al.

Summary: The development of new anti-erosion coatings for wind turbine blade surface protection using nanoengineered polymers is explored. Coatings with graphene and hybrid nanoreinforcements show better erosion protection performance, providing lifetimes up to 13 times longer than non-reinforced polyurethanes. Thermal effects and energy dissipation during repeated soft impacts on the blade surface are discussed.

Boron Nitride Nanotubes for Heat Dissipation in Polycaprolactone Composites

Thomas Pietri et al.

Summary: This article discusses the synthesis of nanocomposites using boron nitride nanotubes for the fabrication of printable filaments in additive manufacturing. A significant improvement in heat dissipation was achieved with 30% BNNT content in polycaprolactone composites, but high loadings affected the rheological properties, making the nanocomposites unprocessable by FFF printers. At 10% loading, a balance between heat dissipation and processability was achieved, demonstrated through a 3D printed radiator as a proof of concept. This approach could lead to the development of high-performance heat dissipation filaments for FFF fabrication processes.
