Charge and Lattice Dynamics in Excitonic Insulator Ta2NiSe5 Investigated Using Ultrafast Reflection Spectroscopy

Tatsuya Miyamoto et al.

Summary: In this study, the optical properties of the excitonic insulator Ta2NiSe5 were investigated using femtosecond reflection spectroscopy. The results showed that changes in excitation intensity lead to variations in the excitonic gap and a transition from an excitonic insulator to a metal. Analysis of the reflectivity also revealed a correlation between metallization and changes in the lattice structure.

Ultrafast charge carrier and exciton dynamics in an excitonic insulator probed by time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

Selene Mor et al.

Summary: An excitonic insulator phase is formed by the spontaneous formation of electron-hole pairs (excitons) in semiconductors, with higher exciton binding energy than the electronic band gap. Employing a nonequilibrium approach, the photoinduced dynamics of an exciton condensate and the valence band electrons in Ta2NiSe5 were studied. The findings reveal the energy gain of ground state exciton formation and demonstrate the use of time-resolved photoemission to study the re-formation dynamics of an exciton condensate.

Unveiling the underlying interactions in Ta2NiSe5 from photoinduced lifetime change

Denis Golez et al.

Summary: We present a generic procedure for quantifying the interplay of electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in photodoped insulators through a comparative analysis of theoretical simulations and experimental data. Our analysis demonstrates that electron-electron interactions dominate electron-phonon interactions. We show that the observed spectral broadening arises from electronic scattering and cannot be explained by electron-phonon interactions. The analysis also highlights the importance of electron-electron interactions in stabilizing the insulating state.

Common microscopic origin of the phase transitions in Ta2NiS5 and the excitonic insulator candidate Ta2NiSe5

Lukas Windgaetter et al.

Summary: Through first-principles calculations, it was found that the structural phase transition in Ta2NiSe5 and Ta2NiS5 is driven by phonon instabilities rather than excitonic instabilities. Phonons break the crystal symmetry, leading to changes in the electronic band structure.

Photoinduced multistage phase transitions in Ta2NiSe5

Q. M. Liu et al.

Summary: Researchers have discovered a unique photoinduced multistage phase transition process in Ta2NiSe5, including a short-lived state and a stable new state, with the latter exhibiting a drastic drop in resistivity by more than four orders of magnitude at 50K with a distinct lattice structure. Additionally, nano-sheet samples with a thickness less than the optical penetration depth are required for achieving complete transition.

Ultrafast melting and recovery of collective order in the excitonic insulator Ta2NiSe5

Hope M. Bretscher et al.

Summary: The researchers used ultrafast spectroscopy to study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of Ta2NiSe5, demonstrating that transient reflectivity in the near-infrared range is connected to low-energy physics. They concluded that electronic correlations play a decisive role in the formation of excitonic order.

Detecting photoelectrons from spontaneously formed excitons

Keisuke Fukutani et al.

Summary: Low-temperature ARPES measurements on Ta2NiSe5 provide evidence for the spontaneous formation of excitons, shedding light on their important roles in optoelectronics, photovoltaics, and photosynthesis. The study also reveals the potential for excitons to form spontaneously in small-gap semiconductors or semimetals, leading to Bose-Einstein condensation at low temperatures. This detection of spontaneously formed excitons in a debated excitonic insulator candidate, Ta2NiSe5, guarantees the excitonic insulator nature of the material at low temperature.

Critical charge fluctuations and emergent coherence in a strongly correlated excitonic insulator

P. A. Volkov et al.

Summary: Excitonic insulator is a coherent electronic phase resulting from the formation of excitons, which is challenging to observe. Using polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy, the quadrupolar excitonic mode in the candidate material Ta2NiSe5 is revealed, showing its electronic character and coupling to lattice modes. The gradual emergence of coherent superpositions of band states at the insulator gap edge is observed, departing from mean-field theory predictions.

Lattice dynamics of the excitonic insulator Ta2Ni(Se1-xSx)5

Mai Ye et al.

Summary: Electronic polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy reveals the strongly correlated excitonic insulator nature of Ta2Ni(Se1-xSx)(5), showcasing that critical excitonic fluctuations decrease with increasing sulfur concentration, leading to a lattice instability. The lattice dynamics of Ta2Ni(Se1-xSx)(5) alloys are studied, showing anomalies in phonon frequencies and lifetimes below T-c(x), as well as temperature-dependent intensity related to electronic and phononic degrees of freedom.

Photoinduced phase transition and associated timescales in the excitonic insulator Ta2NiSe5

Tanusree Saha et al.

Summary: In this study, the nonequilibrium electronic structure and timescales in Ta2NiSe5 were investigated using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The band gap transiently closes within 100 fs after strong photoexcitation, and the rise time of photoemission intensity above the Fermi energy decreases with increasing excitation strength. The experimental observations support an excitonic origin of the band gap in the material.

Detecting electron-phonon coupling during photoinduced phase transition

Takeshi Suzuki et al.

Summary: Researchers used the FDARPES technique to discover that in the photoinduced insulator-to-metal transition of Ta2NiSe5, the lattice modulation induced by the 2 THz phonon mode is the most relevant for the emergence of the photoinduced semimetallic state. Additionally, in the transient state, both semimetallic and semiconducting bands coexist, and FDARPES spectra can selectively detect the phonon-specific couplings to these coexistent band structures by resolving them in the frequency domain.
