Hubbard models for quasicrystalline potentials

E. Gottlob et al.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical method for constructing the Hubbard Hamiltonian of nonperiodic potentials without using Bloch's theorem, and applies it to a recently realized eightfold rotationally symmetric two-dimensional optical quasicrystal using cold atoms. The method involves constructing maximally localized Wannier functions and using them to extract various Hamiltonian parameters. The introduction of a configuration-space representation enables a compact description of the infinite-size quasicrystal, and allows for efficient analysis of its topological structure and many-body physics in the thermodynamic limit. The results suggest that the quasicrystal will host unit-filling Mott insulators in the thermodynamic limit.

Anomalous mobility edges in one-dimensional quasiperiodic models

Tong Liu et al.

Summary: This study reveals a new class of mobility edges, called anomalous mobility edges, which separate localized states from critical states in diagonal and off-diagonal quasiperiodic models. The existence of anomalous mobility edges is analytically demonstrated in a solvable diagonal model, and numerical evidence is shown in an off-diagonal model. The results shed light on the localization and critical properties of low-dimensional systems with aperiodic order.

Finite-temperature phases of trapped bosons in a two-dimensional quasiperiodic potential

Matteo Ciardi et al.

Summary: In this paper, we study the finite-temperature properties of a 2D trapped boson system in a quasiperiodic potential using ab initio path integral Monte Carlo simulations. We find the existence of a robust Bose glass phase, which is not affected by thermal fluctuations up to about half of the critical temperature of the noninteracting system. We characterize local quantities in the trap using zonal estimators and present a phase diagram for a set of parameters relevant to current experiments with quasi-2D optical confinement.

Quantum gases in optical boxes

Nir Navon et al.

Summary: The development of optical box traps has led to breakthroughs in the study of quantum atomic and molecular gases, simplifying interpretation of experimental results and providing more direct connections with theory. Box trapping has allowed for the creation of homogeneous samples in various dimensionalities and for different types of gases, leading to new experiments previously thought impossible. Optically trapped quantum gases in box traps create a potential landscape close to the ideal homogeneous theoretical conditions, highlighting the breakthroughs in experimental many-body physics.

Interactions and Mobility Edges: Observing the Generalized Aubry-Andre Model

Fangzhao Alex An et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the experimental realization of a family of nearest-neighbor tight-binding models with quasiperiodic site energy modulation, and explores the exact mobility edge protected by duality symmetry. The results reveal deviations from single-particle predictions due to attractive interactions affecting state localization differently based on energy levels.

The mean-field Bose glass in quasicrystalline systems

Dean Johnstone et al.

Summary: The study confirms the presence of a mean-field Bose glass in 2D quasicrystalline Bose-Hubbard models, showing that a quasicrystalline geometry alone is not enough to result in differences from crystalline realizations. Random disorder and non-crystalline rotational symmetries play important roles in the phase transition of mean-field BG.
