LAMMPS-a flexible simulation tool for particle-based materials modeling at the atomic, meso, and continuum scales

Aidan P. Thompson et al.

Summary: LAMMPS, a classical molecular dynamics simulator released as an open source code in 2004, has gained popularity for its wide variety of particle interaction models, platform compatibility, and user control over simulation details. With contributions from numerous developers, it has grown from 50,000 lines of code to a million today, showcasing new capabilities like dynamic load balancing and quantum-accuracy machine learning interatomic potentials.

Using good vibrations: Melting and controlled shear jamming of dense granular suspensions

C. Garat et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of vibrations on the behavior of dense granular suspensions. It is found that vibrations can tune the transition from solidlike to liquidlike behavior in these suspensions. Experimental results show that under vibrations, the suspensions of frictional particles exhibit liquidlike behavior similar to that of nonvibrated suspensions of frictionless particles. As the shear rate increases, the suspensions undergo shear thickening and eventually experience shear-jamming, where vibrations no longer have an impact.

Viscometric flow of dense granular materials under controlled pressure and shear stress

Ishan Srivastava et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flow of dense granular materials under external shear stress and pressure using discrete element method simulations, proposing a rheological model to describe the two types of flow. The simulations show viscometric behavior with non-negligible first and second normal stress differences, highlighting the role of contact fabric tensor and strain rate tensor in determining normal stress differences.

Characterization of the Clogging Transition in Vibrated Granular Media

R. Caitano et al.

Summary: The study confirms the transition from clogged to unclogged state in vibrating granular media, characterizing it based on outlet size and vibration intensity. The study proposes a new control parameter for the system and observes a critical value for a continuous transition to an unclogged state, which varies with the outlet size. A phase diagram in the S-D plane shows clogging as a concave surface.
