Unifying the order and disorder dynamics in photoexcited VO2

Hao-Wen Liu et al.

Summary: This study utilizes the real-time time-dependent density functional theory method to track the motion of individual vanadium ions in VO2 during photoinduced phase transition (PIPT). The results reveal that the coherent or disordered dynamics of the vanadium ions can be manipulated by tuning the laser fluence. The competing forces of photoexcited holes and thermal-induced vibrations determine the nature of the PIPT process. The interference of thermal phonons leads to a disordered PIPT process when the laser fluence is weak, while the saturation of photoexcited holes limits the timescale of PIPT when the laser fluence is strong.

The seeds and homogeneous nucleation of photoinduced nonthermal melting in semiconductors due to self-amplified local dynamic instability

Wen-Hao Liu et al.

Summary: By using real-time simulation, we revealed the mechanism of photoexcitation-induced ultrafast nonthermal melting in silicon. The study found that random thermal displacements of atoms can be amplified by local dynamic instability, leading to the formation of self-trapping centers and random nucleation seeds.

The critical role of hot carrier cooling in optically excited structural transitions

Wen-Hao Liu et al.

Summary: Hot carrier cooling plays an important role in photoexcitation-induced phase transitions, enhancing atomic driving forces and atomic kinetic energy. The subsequent cooling induces nonradiative recombination of photoexcited electrons and holes, leading to ultrafast recovery of atomic structures observed experimentally. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of atomic dynamics in optically excited structural phase transitions.
