Bunch shaping in electron linear accelerators

G. Ha et al.

Summary: This review discusses recent progress in controlling electron beam distributions on the mesoscopic scale, with a focus on shaping the beam or introducing complex correlations required for certain applications. The review emphasizes the experimental and theoretical developments of electron bunch shaping methods based on bounded external electromagnetic fields or interactions with self-generated velocity and radiation fields.

Tunable x-ray free electron laser multi-pulses with nanosecond separation

Franz-Josef Decker et al.

Summary: X-ray Free Electron Lasers provide femtosecond x-ray pulses with narrow bandwidth and unprecedented peak brightness, allowing for special modes of operation to deliver double pulses for x-ray pump, x-ray probe experiments. However, the existing single bucket methods have limited delay between the two pulses, hindering the exploration of longer time-scale dynamics. A novel two-bucket scheme has been proposed to cover delays from 350 picoseconds to hundreds of nanoseconds, with similar performance to single pulse operation. The method has been experimentally tested with the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS-I) and the copper linac with LCLS-II hard x-ray undulators.

4D transverse phase space tomography of an operational hydrogen ion beam via noninvasive 2D measurements using laser wires

Jonathan C. Wong et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed the 4D transverse phase space distribution of a 1-GeV hydrogen ion beam using noninvasive 2D laser wire scans. The experimental results showed that the method of perpendicular scans can provide significant new information for the reconstructed 4D phase space distribution.

Transverse phase space tomography in an accelerator test facility using image compression and machine learning

A. Wolski et al.

Summary: This paper describes a novel technique using image compression and machine learning for transverse phase space tomography in an accelerator beamline. Results from the machine learning method are compared with those from a conventional tomography algorithm. The technique allows for rapid reconstruction of the beam's 4D phase space distribution and reduces the size of the data sets involved in the analysis.

Electron beam transverse phase space tomography using nanofabricated wire scanners with submicrometer resolution

Benedikt Hermann et al.

Summary: This study presents a method for characterizing the transverse phase space of high-brightness electron beams using metallic wires and scattered particles detection. By measuring at different locations along the waist, the transverse distribution at different phase advances can be assessed. Experimental results confirm the reliable characterization of the transverse phase space of micrometer-sized electron beams using this method.

Generation of highly mutually coherent hard-x-ray pulse pairs with an amplitude-splitting delay line

Haoyuan Li et al.

Summary: Beam splitters and delay lines are crucial components of modern optical laser technology and are being developed for X-ray free electron laser sources operating in the Angstrom wavelength regime. The challenge lies in achieving highly mutually coherent pulse pairs to enable applications such as interferometry and correlation spectroscopy. Efforts are being made to develop experimental systems with stable delay lines for high sensitivity ultrafast measurements.
