Spin-polarized spatially indirect excitons in a topological insulator

Ryo Mori et al.

Summary: By using time-, spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we directly observe the formation of a long-lived exciton state in a transient excitonic topological surface state (TSS) in Bi2Te3. This state inherits the spin-polarization of the TSS and is spatially indirect along the z axis, as it couples photoinduced surface electrons and bulk holes in the same momentum range, which ultimately leads to an excitonic state of the TSS. These results establish Bi2Te3 as a possible candidate for the excitonic condensation of TSSs and open up a new paradigm for exploring other spatially indirect excitons and non-equilibrium many-body topological physics.

Intervalley Excitonic Hybridization, Optical Selection Rules, and Imperfect Circular Dichroism in Monolayer h-BN

Fang Zhang et al.

Summary: We investigated the photo physics of monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) using first-principles GW plus Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations, revealing excitons with novel k-space characteristics. The excitonic states in h-BN exhibit a co-occurrence of bright s-like and bright p-like states, which is a first finding in intrinsic 2D materials. Additionally, the optical response of monolayer h-BN lacks circular dichroism and shows intervalley mixing between s- and p-like states.

Summary: This study introduces a nonperturbative method using spinor wave functions in the Kohn-Sham equation and GW/BSE for accurate calculation of quasiparticle band structures and optical absorption spectra of materials with strong spin-orbit coupling. Results for various materials show good agreement between calculated quasiparticle band gaps and experimental values, as well as generally better agreement with experiment for SOC splittings.

Giant exciton-enhanced shift currents and direct current conduction with subbandgap photo excitations produced by many-electron interactions

Yang-Hao Chan et al.

Summary: Shift current, generated from nonlinear light-matter interaction in noncentrosymmetric crystals, is considered a promising candidate for next-generation photovoltaic devices. The mechanism for shift currents in real materials, especially with electron-hole interactions, is still not well understood. Using first-principles interacting Green's-function approach, this study investigates photocurrents in real materials under continuous wave illumination, showing strong shift currents in monolayer GeS at subbandgap excitation frequencies due to bound excitons, and giant excitonic enhancement in the shift current coefficients at above bandgap photon frequencies. This suggests that atomically thin two-dimensional materials may be promising for next-generation shift current devices.

Narrow-band high-lying excitons with negative-mass electrons in monolayer WSe2

Kai-Qiang Lin et al.

Summary: A new excitonic species, the high-lying exciton (HX), with an energy almost twice the band-edge A-exciton energy, has been discovered in single-layer WSe2. The HX is populated through momentum-selective optical excitation in the K-valleys and can be identified in upconverted photoluminescence in the UV spectral region.
