LAMMPS-a flexible simulation tool for particle-based materials modeling at the atomic, meso, and continuum scales

Aidan P. Thompson et al.

Summary: LAMMPS, a classical molecular dynamics simulator released as an open source code in 2004, has gained popularity for its wide variety of particle interaction models, platform compatibility, and user control over simulation details. With contributions from numerous developers, it has grown from 50,000 lines of code to a million today, showcasing new capabilities like dynamic load balancing and quantum-accuracy machine learning interatomic potentials.

Capacitance and Structure of Electric Double Layers: Comparing Brownian Dynamics and Classical Density Functional Theory

Peter Cats et al.

Summary: The study compares expensive Brownian Dynamics simulations with classical Density Functional Theory calculations and finds excellent overall agreement for various system parameters. The study focuses on distinguishing differential capacitance at fixed number of ions and fixed ionic chemical potential, and derives and exploits their thermodynamic relations. The quantitative agreement between simulation and theory indicates the potential of DFT for accurately studying room temperature ionic liquids at lower dielectric constants than water.

Modified Poisson-Boltzmann theory for polyelectrolytes in monovalent salt solutions with finite-size ions

Hossein Vahid et al.

Summary: In this study, a soft-potential-enhanced Poisson-Boltzmann (SPB) theory was proposed and shown to efficiently capture ion distributions and electrostatic potential around charged macromolecules. The theory was calibrated and compared to particle-based and atomistic simulation models. The results of this study have important implications for understanding the behavior of polyelectrolytes in aqueous salt solutions.

Interaction between two polyelectrolytes in monovalent aqueous salt solutions

Xiang Yang et al.

Summary: We use the SPB theory to study the interaction between two parallel polyelectrolytes in monovalent ionic solutions. The theory accurately captures the interactions beyond the PE radius and accounts for positional correlations between charged groups. The results suggest that the SPB theory is an efficient way to model interactions in chemically specific complex PE systems.

Moltemplate: A Tool for Coarse-Grained Modeling of Complex Biological Matter and Soft Condensed Matter Physics

Andrew Jewett et al.

Summary: Coarse-grained models are crucial in studying biomolecular dynamics and assembly, but simulating them can be challenging due to unconventional force fields and particle attributes, as well as systems not being in thermal equilibrium. Moltemplate is a file format for storing coarse-grained molecular models and forces, with broad scope and popularity in computational chemistry, materials science, and structural biology. It accommodates new forces developed for LAMMPS, making it a useful tool with thousands of users.

Theory of Inhomogeneous Rod-like Coulomb Fluids

Rudolf Podgornik

Summary: A field theoretic representation of a system consisting of anisotropic and isotropic mobile charges interacting via long range Coulomb and short range nematic interactions is derived and solved using a saddle-point approximation method, resulting in a coupled system of Poisson-Boltzmann and Maier-Saupe equations. Explicit solutions for a rod-like counterion-only system near a charged planar wall were obtained, interpreting the nematic order parameter profile, counterion density profile, and electrostatic potential profile within the framework of a nematic-isotropic wetting phase with a Donnan potential difference.

Primitive model electrolytes in the near and far field: Decay lengths from DFT and simulations

P. Cats et al.

Summary: In this study, the Restricted Primitive Model for aqueous electrolytes was revisited to investigate the decay lengths of ionic density profiles near a planar electrode. Classical Density Functional Theory was used along with Integral Equation Theory and Molecular Dynamics simulations to make predictions and comparisons, revealing significant differences in decay lengths between different models in the far field. The results suggest that explanations for anomalously large decay lengths found in surface force measurements require considerations beyond primitive models.
