Numerical investigation on performance of ultra-thin GaAs solar cells enabled with frontal surface pyramid array

Y. S. Peng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the optical and electrical characteristics of ultra-thin GaAs solar cells with a front-surface pyramid array. The results show that the cells with a pyramid array can significantly improve photon absorption efficiency due to synergistic effects of antireflection and diffraction. Electric simulation demonstrates higher total recombination rate in the solar cells with a pyramid array. Surface recombination has little impact on the photovoltaic performance. The pyramid cells achieve higher J(sc), V-oc, and eta values compared to reference solar cells with anti-reflective coating.

Plasmon resonance of gold and silver nanoparticle arrays in the Kretschmann (attenuated total reflectance) vs. direct incidence configuration

Rituraj Borah et al.

Summary: This study investigates the optical properties of plasmonic Au and Ag nanoparticle arrays in both direct normal incidence and Kretschmann configuration. Numerical models are used to validate the optical spectra of these films and various parameters are systematically studied. The results reveal that the packing density of the nanoparticle arrays significantly affects their far-field/near-field optical properties and plasmon relaxation mechanism. In the Kretschmann configuration, interesting far-field and near-field optical properties arise due to the evanescent fields from different polarizations and incident angles.
