Evaluation of the cell viability and antimicrobial effects of orthodontic bands coated with silver or zinc oxide nanoparticles: An in vitro study

Rashin Bahrami et al.

Summary: Objective: Evaluate the antimicrobial effects and cell viability of orthodontic bands coated with silver or zinc oxide nanoparticles. Methods: Orthodontic bands were coated with nano-Ag or nano-ZnO using electrostatic spray-assisted vapor deposition. The biofilm inhibition test was used to assess antimicrobial effectiveness. The 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay was used for biocompatibility tests. Results: The Ag group showed a significantly higher reduction in the number of bacteria colonies than the ZnO group. Nano-Ag showed the best antimicrobial activity and nano-ZnO showed the highest biocompatibility. Conclusions: Coating orthodontic bands with nano-Ag or nano-ZnO can effectively inhibit oral pathogens.

Quorum quenching of Streptococcus mutans via the nano-quercetin-based antimicrobial photodynamic therapy as a potential target for cariogenic biofilm

Maryam Pourhajibagher et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the anti-biofilm potency and anti-metabolic activity of nano-quercetin-mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) against Streptococcus mutans. In addition, in silico evaluation showed that aPDT can downregulate the expression of various genes involved in the quorum sensing pathway.

Chlorhexidine in Dentistry: Pharmacology, Uses, and Adverse Effects

Frank Poppolo Deus et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the current uses of chlorhexidine in dentistry and highlighted the most effective protocols that maximize clinical efficacy while minimizing adverse drug reactions. The results showed that chlorhexidine serves various purposes and is primarily used as an adjunct to different treatments. Mouthwash is the preferred medium for preventing gingivitis and maintaining oral hygiene. Chlorhexidine products are commonly used in periodontics and postoral surgical procedures with minimal side effects. The antimicrobial properties of chlorhexidine make it an ideal prophylactic when mechanical debridement is not possible.

Attenuation of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans virulence using curcumin-decorated nanophytosomes-mediated photo-sonoantimicrobial chemotherapy

Maryam Pourhajibagher et al.

Summary: This study focused on the use of photo-sonodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PSACT) to attenuate the virulence of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. The Cur-NPhs-PSACT showed dose-dependent antimicrobial effects, with high concentrations leading to significant reductions in cell viability, biofilm killing/degradation, metabolic activity, and expression of virulence determinant genes. This novel approach may have potential in decreasing periodontal disease severity in patients.

Notch down-regulation and inflammatory cytokines and RANKL overexpression involvement in peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis: A cross-sectional study

Iva Milinkovic et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the levels of Notch signaling pathway, bone remodeling mediators, and pro-inflammatory cytokines in peri-implantitis patients and healthy implants. The results showed that down-regulation of Notch 1 and increased expression of inflammation modulators in peri-implantitis may lead to increased osteoclast activity and subsequent bone resorption.

Summary: This study demonstrated the synergistic biocidal effects of ZnO/TiO2 NPs-assisted ultrasound irradiation against Streptococcus mutans biofilms, showing high anti-biofilm activity and significant reduction in metabolic activity and virulence factor expression of S. mutans. The use of MONPs in aSDT could lead to improved biofilm inhibitory effects and has the potential for clinical applications in dental therapy.

Photodynamic Therapy-Current Limitations and Novel Approaches

Gurcan Gunaydin et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) relies on generating singlet oxygen through photosensitizer excitation to destroy target tumor cells. Despite significant progress over the last century, PDT's broad clinical application is hindered by various limitations related to light, tissue oxygenation, and photosensitizer properties.

RNA-seq Analysis of Peri-Implant Tissue Shows Differences in Immune, Notch, Wnt, and Angiogenesis Pathways in Aged Versus Young Mice

Kathleen Turajane et al.

Summary: Transcriptomic analysis identified downregulated pathways in osseointegration of aged mice compared to young mice, involving angiogenic, Notch, and Wnt signaling. Enhanced expression of inflammatory and immune genes at the bone-implant interface in aged mice may compromise bone healing, suggesting the potential for interventions targeting these pathways.
